Competitive Sports Requiring the Most Versatile Athletes

Todd Pheifer
Innate athleticism is obviously a major component in competitive sports. However, competitive sports can also be a complex mental exercise, as athletes must make lighting-quick decisions. This is why some athletes do not always transition well from one level of sports to the next, because they do not have the mental acuity to compete at a higher level. Each sport is different, but many require the same dedication in terms of training and discipline. Here are the top five competitive sports that require the most versatile athletes.

Football

The game of football is not just a bunch of men who beat on each other in a gladiator-like way. Rather, football is a competitive sport that requires strength, speed, and agility. Players must lift weights to build muscle mass. They must also run and do conditioning drills to build stamina. Football requires the ability to adjust, move quickly from side to side, and avoid would-be tacklers. This requires both physical and mental quickness, which must be practiced through repetitive exercises.

Basketball

Hitting the hardwood is also a competitive challenge as the best basketball players combine strength, leaping ability, court vision, and tenacious conditioning. Many players of today do lift weights in order to deal with the physicality of the game. Players also condition themselves so that late in the game they are still able to run, jump, and play defense. In addition, players must anticipate defenses, see the floor and identify open teammates, and understand the flow of play in transition. This requires mental focus, which is partly instinctive, but also comes from practice.

Hockey

The game of hockey requires certain versatility as well, as players must be strong, fast, and able to make adjustments while streaking down the ice on skates. Strength is often a requirement of hockey players, as it agility, which is needed to skate, swing a stick, and avoid the hard hit of an opposing player all at the same time. Some people can skate and others might be able to run around an ice rink and hit a puck. Only some people can effectively do both.

Tennis

Tennis can be a grueling and competitive sport, which is why it also requires versatile athletes. The tennis player must have upper body strength to hit and lower body strength to run. They must also be quick, so that they can dart to a spot, and just as quickly retreat to a completely different corner of the court. People who play tennis must be in shape, but they must also have a certain level of finesse in order to hit the ball to the correct spot. Tennis is a power game, but it is also a strategic game.

Golf

At face value, golf may not seem like a competitive sport that is built on athleticism, particularly if fans see certain professional golfers on television who do not appear to be in great shape. However, golf does require a versatile athlete because a player must have strength to hit the ball far, but also the highly-refined technique to hit the ball straight. In addition, golfers must adjust to hazards, weather conditions, and uneven terrain. Golf requires a great deal of training, which is why a good athlete can rarely walk onto a golf course and excel without prior experience.
