Removing the Mystery for Computer New-Comers

System Unit

The main body of the computer, the system unit contains the internal parts of the computer.

Drives

Drives store files, much like drawers store files in your office desk. Different drives have different letter designations. For example, the hard drive, located inside the system unit, has the letter designation of 'C'. The computer puts every document saved by the user on hard drive "C", unless specifically instructed to save it elsewhere.

CD-Rom or DVD drives have different letter names, which vary from computer to computer depending upon the manufacturer's design.

RAM

RAM, also called Random Access Memory, stores information currently in use by the computer. For example, when typing an email RAM stores the words typed visible and useable on the screen. Unlike storing data on drives, RAM has temporary memory. When the computer powers off, RAM empties and the slate becomes wiped clean.

Programs

Computer programs perform specific, unique tasks. Some computer applications allow users to produce documents, such as letters, reports, or articles. Other programs perform complex mathematical functions. Email programs give users the ability to create and manage email.

Many programs run in the background, unbeknownst to the operator. For example, system files manage Microsoft Windows processes. To view all programs running, press the "CTRL", "ALT", and "Delete" keys on the computer keyboard simultaneously. The Task Manager opens to reveal all open programs. The "Applications" tabs shows programs you would use, such as a word processor or email program. The "Processes" tab shows all programs running, including the system files that run in the background.

Designed to cause damage to other people's computers, unwelcome types of computer programs, known as viruses and malware exist. Although difficult for the average person to understand and a deranged programmer's idea of a joke, these programs often wreak havoc by destroying files, stealing personal information from the hard drive, or even rendering the computer unusable. Because of these programs exist, users must protect their machines with anti-virus software, such as Norton Anti-Virus or Avast.

Peripherals

Peripheral devices work with the computer. Many different peripheral devices exist. For instance, printers create paper copies of data on the computer designated by the user.

Webcams work with the computer, allowing users to participate in video chats or online conferences. Scanners work with computers by taking a photo or document and converting it into a file for use on the computer.
