Computer Illiterate Parents and Internet Safety

Grace Smith
These day's parents have to worry about their children's on-line activity constantly. Never knowing when or where they will meet an on-line predator. Today on the news you hear about teenagers who have run away to meet people they met on-line and some are even being abducted. In some cases there is a happy ending but in other cases the outcome is not so happy. With that being one fear, another fear is parents worrying about their kid's being sexually solicited by on-line predators, even in "kid safe chat rooms".

Luckily there is new technology that allows parents to track on-line activity and ways to block the websites of choice. With just one click you can see all of the sites that your child has visited and what they did. Right now in the US there are many teenagers home alone who use their web camera's to pose naked, or for people to view them naked. It is a known fact that many children are more computer literate than their parents but there are several ways to protect your child and keep them safe. There are books that you can read about keeping kids safe on-line. You can also talk to your child, showing interest is often a way of letting a child know that you are there and they can talk to you. Right now if you were to go into a "kid safe" chat room you would probably talk to at least two adults. Even worse, in the past, on-line preators could have talked with your child. It is a very scary that such a small device connects thousands of on-line predators to every computer on-line in the world.

This article is not telling you to keep your child of the Internet but more or less to help you get involved and help keep them safe while they are on-line. There are many website that help parent that are not computer literate learn a few tricks that will help you keep your kids out of on-line danger. I am going to repeat the fact that keeping in touch with your child is a key part in keeping them safe. There are many things that younger children don't understand like not to give out privet information, like there name, age, date of birth, address, or phone number. By talking with your children you can help them learn Internet safety as you yourself learn it. With just a little talk with your child, you can keep on-line predators from ruining you and your child's lives.
