Most people have a preference in anti-virus software, and both the top-selling programs Norton and MacAfee are good. Either is fine to use if you use the program continually on your computer. Neither program does any good when idle.

Many people incorrectly assume that if they do not accept files from anyone that they are safe from viruses on the Web. While sometimes files are infected, there are viruses found in many areas of the internet. Sometimes the web sites we surf upon have malicious coding within and it can deliver a virus straight into your computer. Scary thought, I know but it is true.

How can you prevent a web page from giving you a virus? Running your virus program all the time will prevent most infections from a nasty virus out here. Most of the time a person does not realize that they have an infection until their computer begins to do bizarre things.

One of the most common things a virus from a Web page will do is change your homepage but it can also send pages from porn sites straight to your desktop. Porn coming on to your computer can get you in all kinds of trouble from a spouse or parent, but depending on the type of porn, you will be arrested. It would be a shame to be arrested for having porn on your desktop when you could have prevented it by simply using the virus scan program.

Viruses can infect a desktop computer in many ways such as e-mail, Web sites, and files on instant messengers and from files downloaded as free music or free movies. With so many children allowed downloading music and movies from the internet it would be easy for them to unknowingly bring in a virus.

A virus can do so much damage to your computer; some that is repairable but some viruses damage your computer so much that it is useless. A virus can erase lines of code from within your computer's master boot files and it will make your computer a nice doorstop.

It is very easy to set you virus software to run scans on a daily basis, just schedule them to run when you are at work or sleeping. It is very important to keep this virus software running and updated to protect your computer all the time.

For those of you who cannot afford MacAfee or Norton's programs, there are countless free virus programs online. Take advantage of them and use them if you do not have virus software installed.
