ComScore Report Indicates 75% of U.S. Internet Users Watch Online Videos

Large Majority Watch Them on Google Owned Websites

The popularity of online videos has been increasing in recent years. A study just released by comScore indicates that in September 75% of Internet users in the United States watched a video online. Most of these Internet users watched them at Google owned websites. With the most commonly visited website to view videos being YouTube. This information was provided in a recent press release from comScore.

The report from comScore indicated that Internet users in the United States viewed more than 9 billion videos while surving online in September. The statistics from September are the most recent available. Google owned websites had the most views of videos, as 2.6 billion videos were viewed on Google owned websites. YouTube led the way by a large margin for Google, with 2.5 billion of those video views occurring on YouTube. That 2.5 billion was 27.6 percent of the national total. Fox Interactive Media was the company with the second most videos with 387 million views, which pales in comparison with just 4.2 percent of the national total videos viewed. Yahoo!'s video sites was close behind in third place with 381 million videos and 4.1 percent of the total videos viewed.

According to the press release from comScore, the average Internet use in the United States viewed three videos online in September. The total number of Americans that viewed videos online in September was 136 million. Google owned websites had the lead in total unique video viewers as well, as they had 71.6 million which is over half of the U.S. total. In second place again was Fox Interactive Media with 41.2 million viewers, and Yahoo! Sites were close behind in third place with 39.6 million viewers.

ComScore's study revealed some other interesting facts about American's habits with online video viewing. The average time for each online viewer watching videos online in September was 181 minutes. The average video viewed online in September was 2.7 minutes. The report indicated that the average online video viewer watched 68 videos during the month of September, which was slightly over two videos per day of the month.

Trends come and go online. There have been popular features in the past online including bulletin board systems, instant messaging, and different types of web browsers. The new trend obviously is the viewing of videos online. YouTube was developed as a private website, but was purchased by Google in the past year, and as these statistics provided by comScore show, it is the hottest website in what is the new hot trend on the Internet.
