Conan Free Bird Performance Ends Last Show for Conan O'Brien

The Final Episode of The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien Aired Friday Night

The Conan Free Bird performance to end Conan's last show was very memorable. The Conan Free Bird performance with Will Ferrell served as a great way to bring an end to The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien, and it truly ended a very classy last episode for Conan. In an episode of The Tonight Show that was more somber than funny, Conan O'Brien bowed out with a huge amount of class, choosing to thank NBC for his time on the network rather than chastising them for trying to move on without him. Though the episode was quite good, the most memorable part of Conan's last show came in the closing credits when they performed Free Bird.

Free Bird is a song that came out way back in 1974, and is considered by some to be the greatest rock song that we have ever seen. It was released by Lynyrd Skynyrd, and became their second huge hit when it peaked at #19 in the Billboard music charts. The history of the song and its band has a tragic place in the halls of rock and roll, but the song has endured many years as a show stopper and even a song to convey messages on film. One lyric that stands out when it was used to close out the final show for Conan O'Brien begins with, "If I leave here tomorrow would you still remember me?" It's a classic line, and fitting for Conan's final episode of The Tonight Show.

To end Conan's final show, he not only had Free Bird performed, but he took the stage with the performers. Picking up an electric guitar, he joined Ben Harper, Beck, and ZZ Tops' Billy Gibbons who also played guitar to rock out to the full version of the song. Will Ferrell sang the lead vocals for the song, and fittingly on drums was Max Weinberg, who has been the lead drummer for Conan's house band for many years. Will Ferrell did a good job with the lyrics to the song, but it was the great guitar playing by the cavalcade of stars that really helped to make this performance of Free Bird memorable. It was definitely a great way to go out, and Conan O'Brien will leave a lasting impression with that final moment.

Uh, and wasn't that Elvis Costello between Beck and Billy Gibbons? He doesn't rate a mention?

I thinks it's a real shame that NBC took all the video's of Conan's O'Brien's last episode off the internet so no one can view it any longer. Ecspecially the Freebird song at the end. I don't understand the big deal. It was a good laugh.... What is NBC afraid of?????

I was beyond impressed by Conan's dignity and integrity during this whole sorry mess. On the other hand I lost a ton of respect for Jay Leno, and will never look at him the same way again.

Conan took a stand and walked away from Tonight rather than sully the landmark show by agreeing to a time change. Too bad Leno couldn't grow a pair and do the right thing.

Conan exited with grace and class, and his eloquent farewell words will stay with me a long time. Not only is he an awesome comic talent, but he also proved himself to be an great person, and judging from his wise words to young people a wonderful dad to his kids. I don't think I've ever been more impressed with a entertainment star's behavior. Jay, on the other hand...

Thank you Conan for all your years of hard work and laughs. College, beginning a job, getting married, becoming a Dad...all took place while watching you. I hope you find another network to bring back your show.

Thumbs up, Conan! You've earned a ton of respect from me with your classy words of wisdom and being a great role model and telling the young to pursue their dreams and to work hard. God bless ya.

Conan was great and I will miss his show. For now, back to Dave Letterman.
