Conan the Movie: Lionsgate Currently Seeking Actors to Be the New Conan

The New Conan Will Be a Throwback to the Original Conan the Barbarian Series

Rob Young
The new Conan will not be Arnold Schwarzenegger, but will be a man in his 20s to early 30s which leads many to believe that the movie will begin in the early years of Conan rather than take up where Arnold left off in the last movie. Fans have waited years for Arnold to return and take up the role as King Conan. But, according to the call for casting that Moviehole released, Lionsgate is not looking for someone to play the role as the much older King, but is looking for someone to play a much younger Conan.

Moviehole goes on to reveal multiple plots of the upcoming movie production and some of the main characters. The plot tells us of the new Conan's character is that he is quite brutal and is ready to die in order to accomplish killing the all-powerful Khalar Singh, who is responsible for the deaths of many Cimmerians. But, there's a twist to the character of Conan, it seems that in the movie he will find a reason to live.

The plot also features a young Conan who insists on joining other teenage boys and become warriors, it also tells of four Picts that one day kill one the boys, young Conan then becomes a savage and his actions disturbs his father so much that he takes him aside and personally starts training him. After the fall of the Cimmerians, Conan is the last and only survivor.

The story almost reads like a throwback to the movie where Arnold starred titled, Conan the Barbarian, that version of the story began with Conan as a young boy when invaders came and destroyed the village and killed his family. Time will tell if this is just a remake of that very popular movie or if it is a unique story in the series.

The movie has been pushed back because in early 2008 it was rumored that production would start by the end of that year, but production is yet to start. Lionsgate hopes that they will be able to revive the popularity of the Conan series which started back in 1982 and still continues to have a strong fan base.

The film is a joint venture between Nu Image/Millennium and Lionsgate and is based on the character created by Robert E. Howard in the comic book series of the same name. The comic was brought to life, or well the screen, when Arnold Schwarzenegger played the role in Conan the Barbarian (1982) and Conan the Destroyer (1984).

Man....as others have stated, Conan was not, originally, a comic book character. He was created by Robert E. Howard in the 30's, and presented in a series of excellent short stories (and one novella length story).

The Arnold movies had nothing in common with anything Howard wrote. I know people like Conan The Barbarian, but to fans of the original stories, it was agonizing to watch. In the Arnold movie, Conan was an obedient slave, trained by pseudo-samurai....he was nothing like Howard's Conan, in terms of the character's origin and motivation, and the movie completely ignored Howard's basic theme.

For almost 30 years, Howard fans have been waiting for a real Conan movie. Why shouldn't we get one? Tolkien fans got 3 of 'em, Harry Potter fans got a bunch, Batman fans finally got Dark Knight....shouldn't we all get a Conan movie Howard himself would approve of?

Apparently not. This new movie looks awful. The scripts throws everything Howard ever wrote out the window. It's anot

The worst part is, you aren't the only one who makes the mistake of assuming Robert E Howard was a comic book writer. It's really quite sad to what lengths lazy journalists will go to not do any research.

"The film is a joint venture between Nu Image/Millennium and Lionsgate and is based on the character created by Robert E. Howard in the comic book series of the same name."

    this is a major fail.

Serious question: do you know how to use Google? I'm wondering because a simple search would've revealed to you that Robert E. Howard was not a comic book writer from the seventies, but a pulp writer from the twenties and thirties. You would've learned that Conan the Barbarian was not Howard's Conan and that the current production is going to be just as unfaithful to the source material, while at the same time not having the quality of Milius' film.

It isn't even apparent that Rob Young read the script upon which he is commenting. It directly contradicts Conan's slave origin as portrayed in the first film.

    *sighs*

This so-called "news" article has more errors than a freshman's term paper. Robert E. Howard did not write comics, and this upcoming film is a great big middle finger to Howard's legacy. The script was penned by two of the worst screenwriters in Hollywood and the project is helmed by a B-list director. This upcoming film is a farce.

Robert E Howard was an incredible author who is unsurpassed at writing bloodthirsty action adventure even by today's standards. The apparent story of the new film has nothing to do with Howard's work, unfortunately, with the exception of the lead characters name. And Rick, if that lead character is in fact a tattooed Arabic chap of average height with close set eyes and air bags for lips then yes McLean's the man.

Conan is not a comic book character. He is a literary figure from the 30s. And this movie does not make justice to it at all.

  • Andradir1/3/2010

Go get a real story by Robert E. Howard. As already mentiones, one of the Del Rey books is a perfect choice.
You will notice that the movie-Conan is not the real Conan.
This "newer" movie is an insult to Robert Howard.
