Young Conan O'Brien
Conan attended Brookline High School and was managing editor of the school newspaper. He graduated valedictorian in 1981.
Smart and young, Conan went to Harvard. Throughout college Conan worked on the famous Harvard Lampoon humor and satirical magazine. In his sophomore and junior year he was The Lampoons president. He graduated magna cum laude in 1985 with a Bachelor of Arts in History and Literature.
Conan O'Brian: Writer and Comic
After college Conan had stints with HBO, SNL and The Simpson's. The Simpson's revived his career as he said in a speech at Class Day in 2000.
But Conan's real break came in 2004 when he was asked to audition for executive producer Lorne Michaels. The audition was as talk show host for a new program to succeed Late Night with Dave Letterman who was switching networks.
Conan: Late Night Talk Show Host
Then on September 13,1993 Late Night with Conan O'Brien premiered. Conan struggled the first three years but NBC had no other option and as they had seen improvement they kept the faith. After that first three years the show was being nominated for an Emmy Award every year for Best Writing in a Comedy. By 2005 he had 2.5 million viewers and in 2007 won The Emmy in the category he had so unsuccessfully failed to win.
Conan: Family Time
In 2000 Conan met Elizabeth Ann (Liza) Powel when she appeared on his show. They dated for 18 months and were married in 2002 in her hometown of Seattle.
Conan purchased a $10.5 million dollar home in ritzy Brentwood to prepare for his move to Los Angeles to take over the Tonight Show in 2009. As a gag he brought along his 1992 Taurus SHO and actually showed it off on his inaugural episode of the Tonight Show.
Conan: Renegotiated Contract 2004 & Taking Over for Leno
Conan renegotiated his contract in 2004 and NBC agreed he would take over The Tonight Show from Jay Leno in 2009. In June of 2008 it was announced that he would take over from Leno on June 1, 2009. He actually appeared on Leno's last show.
Conan's first guest was Will Ferrell and his first musical group was Pearl Jam.
