Conception and Pregnancy Myths: Hold Your Legs High and a Boy You Shall Spy!

Glenda Hoff
With so many tall tales floating around about how to conceive properly, how can you be sure they work? When my husband and I were working to conceive our children, I read book after book and even went so far as to turn our old IBM-compatible on (it was 1993) and attempt to download some information on the subject. Unfortunately, I found no real proof that any one method or "test" would give me the results I longed for.

As much as we longed for a healthy baby, our ultimate goal was a boy first and a girl second. My husband was the last of his surname and we wanted to make sure his father knew we would carry on the family name. I started speaking with friends, coworkers, relatives, etc. about our hopes and one myth (legend? tale?) kept surfacing.

The story that had been passed on for generations was one of holding your legs high in the air as though you were going to lay on your bike and ride an air bicycle. The object was to hold this position for as long as possible without letting your legs fall and the trick was to do this immediately after intercourse. The result would be a definite pregnancy and the position of your body would force the "chosen" sperm to release the correct chromosomes, resulting in a boy.

Shortly after a discussion with a group of friends, prior to my conception, three of our friends were attempting to conceive. Another myth that I won't delve into was the idea that if one woman gets pregnant, her neighbors, sisters, cousins, friends, and anyone within a five mile radius was apt to become pregnant as well. Just like a row of dominos, it happened. They were all pregnant and anticipating a boy having followed the instructions to a tee.

Having seen their results, we practiced the same position and found ourselves pregnant with a month. As expected, in a nice clean row, every one of our friends had their children and, as predicted by the tale, all had boys. Our time was just around the bend and we were picking out yellows and greens for the outfit home and the little nursery. We chose not to jinx the affair by finding out the sex early and decided to leave the outcome to fate. On June 28, Jacob graced us with his presence at 2:41pm. The rain was pouring down, tornados were attempting to rear their ugly tails everywhere and the sky was as black as night but, the blue eyes of our precious little boy drowned out the horrible weather outside.

This method has been a tried and true reality, passed down for generations and written in journals of women having babies in times when farmboys were a necessity to the family. Although I can't promise you definite results, I can confirm the results of myself and our friends as well as other generations of ladies that have used the same method. I welcome you to post your results and wish you the best of luck in your journey! Regardless of your outcome, a healthy child is a blessing in itself.

Did you know the male chromosomes determine the sex of your child? Women only produce "X" chromosomes. It takes an "X" and "Y" chromosome to conceive a boy - it's all on him!
