Concerns About 'The Avengers' Movie

L. Vincent Poupard
May 4th, 2012 will see the release of the highly-anticipated movie, "The Avengers." As a writer who spends a lot of time focusing on the movie industry, and a comic book fan, there are certain concerns that I have about the movie. I am sure that at least some of these concerns are shared by other fans as well.

Screen Time

One of the concerns that I have about "The Avengers" is the issue of screen time. With a large number of superheroes in the movie, it will be a challenge to try to share an ample amount of screen time for each character. It will surely be a task when you consider the fact that the superheroes in the movie include Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Hulk, Hawkeye, Black Widow, and Nick Fury.

Crowd Reaction to Pre-Movies

This year will see both "Thor" and "Captain America: The First Avenger" coming to the big screens. Both of these characters, and actors, will be playing a prominent role in "The Avengers." My concern over this comes after the question, "What if people do not like the onscreen versions of Thor and Captain America?" While I am anticipating both movies, there is a chance that some fans might be turned off to "The Avengers" if they do not like the versions of these characters.

Enemy

All of the official information that has come out so far about "The Avengers" has posted that Loki will be the antagonist of the movie. I wonder if Joss Whedon will be able to make it believable that Loki is actually a worthy rival for the superhero team. There are many borderline fans that might wonder if one character could be worthy enough to take on a team of some of the greatest heroes ever assembled. There has been rumor about a Baron Zemo connection, but nothing has been confirmed.

Cameos

There are many ideas about new Marvel Comics movies in the future. It has been a theme in the past to have cameos in superhero movies of characters that will be getting their own share of the franchise in the future. My concern is that with so many planned characters heading to the movies in the next few years, could Marvel inundate "The Avengers" with too many cameos? Will we see Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, Luke Cage, Deathlok, and others in "The Avengers?"

Continuity

My final concern comes with the choice of which continuity to go with for the movie. Will "The Avengers" follow the original story line of the group and have them share leadership responsibility? Will Captain America take the leadership role in the group like he did after issue #16? Will Iron Man appear as the leader of the group as he does in the current cartoon version "The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes?"

Whichever continuity is chosen (or what portion of the continuity), there are going to be fans that feel like they are not being listened to. This could be a issue that could break the movie in the end for certain fans. The younger fans that have not read the older comics might be upset if the original ideas are used. Many of the long-term fans might be turned off by using the current ideas. Only time will tell.

I'm not the world's biggest comic book fan either. I enjoy some of these movies, but wouldn't go out of my way to go see them.

I haven't been hooked on comic books in over 40 years. This may end up costing me a lot of money. Nice article.
