Concert Review: Roberta Gambarini

Bridget Ilene Delaney
My mom, my sister, and I all attended a jazz concert by Roberta Gambarini. This was part of the 2011 Banners Series. We were able to attend because my sister, Briana Delaney, bought season tickets so we did not have to buy separate tickets to each event that cost.

The Banners Series Roberta Gambarini concert was held on the McNeese State University campus like many of the events.

Out of the three of us, I enjoyed her music the most. Thankfully, it was not too loud. She was accompanied by a pianist and a bassist. The music reminded of what I would hear in an old Bosco cartoon.

However, there was no doubt that both my mother and my sister agreed that she had a great voice.

Roberta Gambarini was born and raised in Torino, Italy. It was there that she learned to love jazz. However, her jazz has an American flavor and she now lives in America.

Critics say that she is the true successor to Ella Fitzgerald. She has also been said to be the true successor of Sarah Vaugn and Carmen McRae. In part, this is due to her multi-octave range which Hank Jones says makes her the best jazz singer to emerge in the past 60 years.

If you enjoy jazz, it seems that tickets to a Roberta Gambarini concert cost around $30, so it is a great concert to attend if you can afford the tickets. More information can be found on Roberta Gambarini's MySpace Page.

This concert is also great to expose children to different types of music. This way children can learn about jazz and hear jazz music. There are some familiar songs to everybody in the concert and then there are some songs that are only familiar to people who love jazz. Some songs, people may not know at all. However, they are all pretty and it is lovely to hear Roberta Gambarini sing them.
