A Strong Tradition

There are many interesting things to do in Luzerne County and attending concerts is one of them. There is a strong musical tradition in Northeastern Pennsylvania, and there are many
great places to hear a concert. There is music to suit just about everyone.

High Schools

The tradition starts in high school and many of the local high schools perform concerts
at their schools and in public. A highlight of this program comes every Christmas Season
when the local high schools are invited to perform in public at the Luzerne County
Courthouse located in Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania. The high school concerts were formally
scheduled for a Friday night in December. Due to budget cuts, the concerts are now
performed during regular business hours. My high school, G.A.R Memorial High School
performed a Christmas concert and now has one scheduled for the spring.

Colleges and Universities

The local colleges and universities also have music programs. Of special interests is
the Wilkes University Jazz Ensemble which perform once or twice a year.

Saint Stevens Episcopal Church

Every year I look forward to the annual Christmas concert at this church. The Wyoming
Band plays here every year and puts on a marvelous concert. I go every chance I get.

Public Square

There are concerts on public square in downtown Wilkes-Barre several times a year. Of
special interest is the Chery Blossom Festival Concert which attracts some of the finest
bands in the area.

River Commons

The Wilkes-Barre River Commons has an amphitheater which makes it an ideal place
for a concert. The river commons project was just completed and there are many plans for
this facility. There is a full time events coordinator, and there are numerous concerts
throughout the year.

Kirby Park

Kirby Park in Wilkes-Barre is another great place for concerts. There are several each
year and a favorite of mine is the annual Fourth of July Concert. The Northeast
Pennsylvania Philharmonic plays at this concert every year. The Northeast Pennsylvania Philharmonic Orchestra is a real treasure, and I always enjoy their concerts.

Barnes and Noble Book Store

The Barnes and Noble's Bookstore in downtown Wilkes-Barre supports the students
at King's College and Wilkes University. It also does a good job helping to bring the
community together and has several concerts every month.

F.M. Kirby Center

The F.M. Kirby Center in downtown Wilkes-Barre is a great place to hear professional concerts by out of town performers. Some of the best musicians in the country perform here.

WVIA

Music is a big part of local public televison station WVIA. Every Saturday night they present a program about Ballroom Dancing and then one about the Pennsylvania Polka. The programs are open to the general public, as just about anyone can dance on the program. If you ever wanted to dance on television, click here to register at the station.
