Condoms: Don't Feel Guilty When He / She Whines About Wearing Them

Condoms Are Cheaper Than Diapers!

I was in aisle 14 and noticed that a pack of 12 spermicidal condoms was 10 bucks. For penny counters like me, $10 is a lot to spend on one thing. Then again, $10 is not that bad compared to diapers, formula, baby clothes, and all that stuff! It is important to wear condoms for better protection against pregnancy and STDs. So why do some whine about it so much? The risks are so high, you'd think everyone would happily use condoms. But that isn't so. From stories I've heard to personal experience, it is common for boyfriends or girlfriends to whine about putting on a condom. "We've both been tested" or "You just got off your period" are common arguments. Even in monogamous healthy relationships, wearing a condom is mandatory if you don't want a kid. Only abstinence is 100% effective, but only about 2% of couples who use a condom perfectly get pregnant each year. If used PROPERLY, condoms will help keep you from getting pregnant! So what can you do if he or she gives that annoying sigh when you take out the condom? Well, it is rude and selfish for someone to argue about condoms in the heat of the moment; therefore, you can just put your clothes on. It is harsh, but your safety is more important than pleasure. This is not an ideal situation, so I recommend talking about condoms and other contraception in a private place at a time when sex will not happen. During dinner, while watching television, and in the car are appropriate places to talk about this. Below are a few things to bring up during a conversation about condom use.

No, no to prego!

As I've stated earlier, only 2% of couples who use condoms perfectly get pregnant each year. You are welcome to state statistics like this to further your side. You may also note that the use of spermicide in addition to condoms can help against pregnancy especially if the condom gets torn. Pleasure is not worth having a baby if you do not want one.

Condoms are cheaper than babies!

Babies cost lots of money. Tell your partner that you do not think you both could financially afford a baby. There are baby seats, toys, strollers, medicine, doctor visits, and eventually college to pay for. Especially if you have debt and tuition bills, you do not need a baby.

Birth control pills are not enough to ease your mind...

The birth control pills I've used are about 97% effective when used properly. Even if you miss a day, you usually have nothing to worry about. However, if you still feel uncomfortable having sex without a condom, just use it! If you are curious about sex without a condom, you can try that only if you are on birth control pills (or implant) and if both partners have recently been tested for STDs.

Can you emotionally handle an abortion or adoption?

Abortions also cost money (something around $500), but what about the emotional cost? Even if you are pro-choice, it is hard to get an abortion. Luckily I've never had to make this choice, but I know a few people and it was hard for them. Adoption is often a wonderful thing especially if a baby is given to a good couple, but can still be emotionally traumatic. Neither of these is worth sex without a condom.

These are just a few things to bring up while talking to your partner about using condoms. In most lasting relationships, the whiner will agree to condom use and not give you the annoying grunt about it. The key to remember is you should never feel guilty about wanting to use a condom. No matter how much he or she whines about it not feeling as good or whatever, you mustn't feel guilty. It's your safety and theirs'. If they keep up the whining after you talk to them, remember there are more fish in the sea.
