Confessions of a Golf Mom

I Know the Term is "Soccer Mom", but Asthmatic Kids Don't Play Soccer

Kay Whittenhauer
I'm not exactly a "Soccer Mom", but I presume that it's a loose term pertaining to all sports so I 'll share with you a "Golf Mom" story. Incidentally, it's when of my "proud Mom" stories, too.

I remember one of my proudest moments as a mother. All of my friends remember it, too, because I must have told the story a million times. In fact, most can tell it for me. Now pretend you hear the noise that happens right before a dream sequence on TV...

It was a picture perfect day the summer that my son was 6. One of our golf foursome couldn't make it, and I couldn't get a sitter, so the three of us decided to bring my six-year-old out for nine holes at an executive course.

My son had his own set of pee-wee clubs. He liked to knock some practice balls around the front yard every now and then, but rarely got out on the links. After he got over the fact that the ladies tees and the junior tees were the same thing everything was OK.

He teed off on the fifth hole- an 81- yard par three. HE DROVE THE GREEN! There it was- my proudest moment as a mother! His ball was probably 10 feet away from the cup. No one could believe it! (Everyone else had overshot.)

By the time we three were on the green, Nick had taken to looking for bullfrogs in a nearby pond. I was really hoping that he would get his first par (or even a birdie!) when I called him over.

He ran over, picked up the ball, and placed it on the lip of the cup. So much for a birdie! Or even a par. It was all about fun- never about being frustrated- but man, I really wished he would have sunk it form 10 feet. None the less, I was still proud!

Hey, he could have probably gotten a hole-in-one if he'd wanted to. Right? Neat story.
It's always fun to hear about other mothers' kids. I enjoy telling them, too. Like the time that..........

LOL ... one of my proud moments was when my offspring was able to hit the ball over the water trap, which has claimed so many balls ...

Well, Kay, I can feel the pride in the story, but being a "Ballophobic" myself, I have to admit I have no idea what most of the golf terms mean. (sorry abt my ignorance). Even so, I'm sure whatever your little guy did was amazing, & as a mom, THAT I can appreciate! ; )

How fun. I know you were proud regardless of his playing in the pond! Great story.
