Most every mountain bike made can be considered to be a cross country mountain bike. Cross country mountain bikes are made from light weight materials. Because they are light weight, it makes them ideal to ride over almost any type of terrain; including steep hills. This type of mountain bike is by far the most common. It is the most versatile, as it can be used on bike trails, and a daily commute on the road.

These types of bikes are usually custom built.
3. Trails
If you want to ride trails and only trails, this is your mountain bike. Before actually riding on a trail, a few basic skills should be practiced and perfected, to lower the risk of injury. To fully master trail riding can take a lifetime of practice, but it's very rewarding and fun. Trail bikes also are also rarely bought "off the shelf." Most trail mountain bikers prefer to have one customized and built. These types of mountain bikes are very light weight.
4. Jump and slalom
This type of mountain bike is built from very durable materials. They have to be able to endure being jumped on a regular basis. Besides jumping, jump and slalom mountain bikes are made for street racing and slalom events. They have a very strong front end suspension system. This type of mountain bike is very popular within the mountain bike sporting world.
Whether you're a novice or an experienced mountain biker, the sport is very enjoyable. As you can see, there are several types of mountain bikes available to you. You will want to buy a bike that suits your riding style. If you're not sure what type of mountain bike would be best for you, just test ride as many styles as possible. Don't hesitate to ask any friendly staff in your local mountain bike store. They will most likely be well trained, and probably are extreme mountain bike enthusiasts. They will gladly answer any of your questions.
