Congress Brings Country to Brink of Economic Disaster -- Again

What Can We Do?

Gary Davis
Are the politicians we have in Washington out of touch enough to allow a government shutdown? Surely they aren't that arrogant because that's what it boils down to: arrogance. I would challenge any Republican or Democrat to look me in the eye and say they have the power to pawn their thinking to the point where the government necessities are not funded.

Associated Press writer Andrew Taylor has posted an article titled "Time short, tempers flare in budget showdown."

The bottom line seems to be that the Republicans got a cut recently before Congress took a break. However, now they are back and they are fighting rather than negotiating.

What do you suppose the result would be if, by the deadline imposed, there were no agreement reached and these people were summarily dismissed from their jobs for "failure to satisfactorily perform?" What if when we hired these politicians, the people they ran against were kept by the phone and brought into office?

There should never be, as Taylor elicits, a "budget showdown" where the lives of citizens can be dramatically affected. However, it isn't just that. I shouldn't have to get up in the morning and even worry at least whether or not my government is going to be running. Do you feel as I feel? That even the possibility of a government shutdown is unacceptable?

Look at Japan. Japan has no choice. They are fighting for their lives. In fact, there are people fighting for their lives every day all over the world. However, the United States, while having to look in the mirror, isn't in a position where she has to shut down.

Now the actual phrase or term that Andrew Taylor uses is a "partial" government shutdown. Does that make it any more acceptable? It makes it worse. We get to worry what is affected if that happens.

Why the article; what's the news?

The news isn't the fight over the budget. The government has waited the last few months until the last minute to fund what the doctors get for Medicare. This is the second time that there has been the possibility of the government shutting down.

We currently have a government that is broken. They cannot agree unless there is the possibility of dramatic damage to the country.

What should we do about it? What can we do about it?

gee golly, they might have to change things and make some major financial backers angry and lose their next election. :) Good article with some thought-provoking statements.
