Congress Knocks Down Border Security Fence

The Insincere Fence Act of 2006

Tony Jingo
The Security Fence act of 2006, or more aptly titled The Insincere Fence Act of 2006, promised American citizens an 854-mile double layered barrier spanning across the U.S. and Mexico border. This was pushed through during mid term elections, when Democrats and Republicans were putting out their best car salesman's pitches. They were going to address the illegal immigration problem. No sooner than the votes were cast and the law went into effect, the same pols began to undermine it.

On December 17, 2007, the Democratic congress scrambled before the end of year break and put together an omnibus appropriations bill that secretly adds more than 10,000 pork-barrel earmarks and guts the Secure Fence Act. It goes from bad ( President Bush) to worse ( Speaker Pelosi).

This Democratic Congress wrote and passed this half trillion-dollar Congressional bill. The dollar amount met the President's goal, but what they did was a bait and switch move by air dropping the pork-barrel items in, and as you know by now gutted the funding for the fence. Which I'll remind you, the fence building is a 2006 law, not a request. While the required funds for the fence were buried, Congress was able to earmark 10-million dollars in emergency funds for lawyers representing illegal immigrants.

The blame doesn't stop at the House Speakers door. As a matter of fact House Democrats stated, they were adopting the Senate version which was an effort by border state Republicans. This is partly true. Texas Republican Senator Kay Hutchison spearheaded the effort to change the 2006 law, and this was cosponsored by fellow Republican Senator Cornyn. Something stinks in Texas, folks, and it aint the refried beans. It appears that Bush's "dear friend" Texas U.S. Attorney Johnny Sutton and the pair of Republican Senators are all in cahoots allowing unfettered illegal border crossings into Texas.

Watchdog group Grassfire, revealed that only five miles of double-layer fencing were built in the first year of the act.

Not all Republicans are on board with the Texas Senators. Republican Senator DeMint from North Carolina criticized the bill on the floor. He pointed out the lunacy in slashing the funding for the fence, eliminating the ban on sanctuary cities, and providing millions for lawyers to represent illegal aliens. Rep. Peter King, from N.Y. was reported in the Washington Times as saying the omnibus spending bill "guts the Secure Fence Act almost entirely. Quite simply, it is unacceptable."

Republican presidential candidate Duncan Hunter is the fiercest opponent of this bill.

"The success of the San Diego Border Fence demonstrates the overall effectiveness of the double-layered approach and the importance of extending this infrastructure across our southern land border," Hunter said.

"Pulling back from the double-fence mandate is a prescription for failure that will only allow more smugglers, criminals and illegal aliens to enter the United States through our land border with Mexico," the California congressman added.

"If enacted," Hunter concluded, "this legislation would represent a significant step backwards in the effort to secure our borders."

Can someone please get this message over to Texas!?

Online petitions are available for delivery to President Bush, Speaker Pelosi, and Senate Majority Leader Reid.

Interesting information. Well written as all of your articles are.

Tony, I agree with you on the border fence question. However, not every earmark in that bill is not something I personally view as pork. Just because the project doesn't directly benefit you or I does not mean it is not reasonable.

liked your car salesman comment, i will have to remember it.. it's so appropriate around election-time.
interesting article about the fence.. i remember when they passed that law, but did not realize they only built five miles. (it's not the berlin wall, it's the maginot line)

has anyone ever driven through kansas? there's so much room in this country...just let them in. open up the boarders, register the newcomers and we'll have more minimum wage workers and tax payers. or we can keep spending money to keep them out via fences and swat teams. i say, let 'em in if they want to come.

[continued]we will compensate you for the minimum loss of property and establish a new irrigation system in order for you to continue utilizing the resources your family is accustomed to." My response: "damn it, f&*%#@g criminal rat bastards compromising the safety of my family and the sovereignty of my nation! Damn my bad luck of having this property abutting a foreign nation, give me the check, and please can you make the barrier thicker and higher, assign BP to my block, the iced tea will be cold, I don't need any firearms I have my own-I'll call you if I bag any invaders entering my home or threatening my Families safety"

Minus Factor, you get the #1 answer- shots fired to be negotiated. I also have a huge problem with encroaching on our Pvt prop. I struggle with this issue constantly because of that. I place my self in the same position as my fellow citizens in Texas and those residing in other border towns. If my Gov't approached me with this scenario: "Hordes of illegal aliens are invading the country through your back yard and many are vanishing into the nation to commit heinous crimes, many are assisted by smugglers that are also in communication with terrorist organizations looking for easier ways to invade the U.S., most will burden our already overtaxed resources, and many are also assimilating as productive members of society, but will remain undocumented. We need to erect a 15 foot double layer barrier to slow this tide down, serve as a deterrence & help give BP time to round 'em up. Unfortunately this national security issue is taking place through your back yard, therefore, we will compensate

[Continued from post below] A dynamic solutions is needed for this problem, not a passive one, such as a wall.
