Congressman Dennis Kucinich: Democratic Candidate for President in Election 2008

Kelly Davis
Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) is a man of many accomplishments. At 23, he was elected to the City Council of Cleveland, Ohio, a seat that led to his being elected to Mayor of Cleveland at the young age of 31. Currently, he is serving as a Congressman of the 10th District of Ohio. After an unsuccessful Presidential run in 2004, he has announced his candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2008.

On a recent appearance on Real Time with Bill Maher, Kucinich talked about being a vegan, his thoughts on Iraq and the current administration. Researching this candidate has been quite interesting as I was unaware that Kucinich had filed impeachment articles against Vice President Dick Cheney. The latter is not only shocking, but an almost bizarre move considering that Dick Cheney has been called the most feared man in politics. Currently, the *Impeach Bush* movement that is wildly spreading is quickly thwarted by liberal supporters once they realize W. being impeached would result in VP Cheney becoming the leader of the free world. So it should be said that impeaching Cheney directly is a rather progressive concept.

Exhibiting the typical voting record of a liberal democrat, he is pro-choice, for greatly increasing Corporate taxes, against the Death Penalty, and against the Iraq War. Also, he is for the decriminalization of marijuana posession, an hot button issue on both sides of the aisle.

Recently Kucinich introduced a House Bill calling for free universal health care for all American citizens, and issue that is in the spotlight this week due to the premiere of Michael Moore's Sicko, a documentary film about the US Healthcare Crisis, premiering at the Cannes Film Festival. A not for profit US healthcare system is the core issue of Congressman Kucinich's campaign, as well as an issue many Americans believe is a necessary change from the current culture of big Insurance companies invading the private healthcare issues that SHOULD be handled by doctors.

Another groundbreaking bill introduced by Kucinich is the Universal Pre-Kindergarten Act, which would provide free universal voluntary education to children ages 3-5. The program would cost taxpayers an estimated $60 billion dollars a year, which Kucinich plans to pay for by cutting the Pentagon's budget by 15%.

Dennis Kucinich is a great candidate, fitting the profile of the perfect leftist politician. He supports a full repeal of the Patriot Act, a full withdrawal of troops from Iraq, and the implementation of the Department of Peace, something which, judging by the midterm elections, the American people appear to have great interest in. The media coverage of this candidate has been relatively sparse, but I have a feeling that we will be hearing alot more from him in the coming months.

"I envision an America which has the capacity to reconnect with the heart of the world; an America which proceeds in the world optimistically and courageously. An America which understands that the world is interdependent, that it is inter-connected, and that what we do today impacts future generations." - Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich

He would do well to drop out of the race and support Obama, perhaps getting elected as Vice President. Obama could use a peacenik to anchor him. As it is, with so many candidates, we might end up with Hillary as the Dem nomination. She is too much a part of the GWB way of politics and the people are hungry for change.

From what I read about impeachment the process of "arguing" on the Senate floor, voting and then passing to the House (or vica versa), process repeated would take too long to accomplish. Even so, if Cheney was impeached, GWB would pardon him. Impeaching both, would leave us with who? The US public got set up and we can only hope the big guys won't decide to call off the next election. Kucinich seems to be a good buy, but the young wife, with a tongue stud, does not appeal to older voters as First Lady quality.
