Congressman Duncan Hunter Officially Drops Out of GOP Race; Fred Thompson Not Far Behind

Hard Worker
California Congressman Duncan Hunter announced Saturday that he will be officially dropping out of the GOP presidential race.

Duncan Hunter had his best showing in Wyoming where he finished third in the polls behind Mitt Romney and Fred Thompson with 8% of the vote.

Duncan Hunter had been elected to Congress in 1980 and was a Vietnam veteran.

Hunter's announcement comes as no surprise to most political analysts who believed long before that Duncan Hunter would be dropping out. In most caucus and primary votes, Hunter barely received 1% of the vote.

With the announcement from Hunter of dropping out of the race, it is only a matter of time before GOP presidential candidate Fred Thompson drops out of the race as well. He came close to doing that early Saturday night but maintained the position that he will continue on campaigning. Thompson had finished third in the South Carolina primary; a state Thompson had hoped to win. It is believed that when Thompson drops out, he will throw his support behind Senator John McCain who won the South Carolina primary.

Meanwhile on the Republican side, Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney won the Nevada caucus and is the party front runner along with Senator John McCain for the GOP nominee.

The next GOP primary state will be Florida where New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani will make his first and quite possibly, last stand. If Giuliani does not win the Florida primary, he too will likely drop out of the race.
