Congresswoman Giffords Shot in Head: She is on Palin's Bull's Eye Map

Julia Bodeeb
Being a politician in America is a dangerous job. Our country has an unfortunate history of the assassination of presidents. And our rate of murder via gun violence is much higher than in European countries. And now a member of Congress has been shot in the head while making a public appearance.

Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, age 40, has survived surgery after being shot in the head, notes Reuters. The shooting occurred during a public appearance in Tucson, Arizona. A minimum of 18 people were shot at the event in a Safeway grocery store.

Six people have died after the shootings, notes Reuters. One of those killed was a federal judge. U.S. District Court Judge John M. Roll has died in the attack. He had been the chief judge in Arizona since 1991. A 9-year-old child was also killed in the attack, notes MSNBC.

The alleged gunman, Jared Laughner, has been taken into police custody. He is age 22. The FBI is investigating this mass murder.

Mrs. Giffords is a Democrat. Arizona is a largely Republican state. Could there have been a political motive to this shooting? At the time of the incident Congresswoman Giffords was involved in an event called "Congress on Your Corner," reports the NY Times.

At a prior event of Mrs. Giffords, a man was arrested when his gun was dropped onto the floor of the grocery store. Mrs. Gifford's office in Arizona was vandalized after the health care reform vote was passed.

Mrs. Giffords is one of the Democrat politicians on the offensive "Bull's Eye" map Sarah Palin distributed, notes USA Today. How must Mrs. Palin be feeling now? That map was a disgrace to America. To see a photograph of the Sarah Palin Bull's Eye map that included Mrs. Gifford's name go HERE.

Mrs. Giffords was married to Cmdr. Mark Kelly. He is originally from New Jersey and is a NASA astronaut and Navy pilot, notes the NY Times. He has now arrived in Arizona to be with his wife during this time of crisis.

The nation is watching the news and praying for the recovery of Congresswoman Giffords. There is too much gun violence in America. There are too many killings.

Trust a right winger to shout the loudest. That's where things are going wrong...

I was sick to my stomach when I heard about this entire story. Obviously, people who choose to be violent like this have major problems, but I do think there are people who are weak-minded and susceptible to rhetoric about violence and hate.

Let's examine the facts: There is zero links between Palin and the assassin (Loughner). Loughner actually attending this same type of event with Gifford back in 2007. This was before anyone knew who Palin was and the Tea Party wasn't even around. The crosshairs is a strawman defense, since the Liberal hangout, The Daily KOS actually "targeted" Gifford as well:http://patterico.com/2011/01/08/markos-blames-palin-for-giffords-shooting-but-theres-just-one-problem-daily-kos-put-a-bulls-eye-on-giffords-too/ Of course this has been scrubbed but some folks grabbed a screenshot before it was accomplished. I noticed you didn't mention that the lunatic was, according to the facts, a left-winger. Even his friends stated this. Before jumping on the liberal media bandwagon, I'd suggest you wait until the facts come out.

It seems this nation has been gearing up for such an event (and possibly more to follow). This act of violence threatens the freedom of all Americans, no matter the political ideology. Nice report.

Praying for a swift and full recovery. Praying for the families of those who lost loved ones in this tragic shooting in Arizona. What senseless violence. cheers for the reporting.

Not only was the Congresswoman shot, other people were killed, including a child. That is terrible. What Sarah Palin did was unconscionable. I don't know if that was what triggered this, but it certainly looks suspicious.

I truly hope it was non-political. Of course, they will try to blame Sarah Palin for it.

When I first heard this story I skimmed throught the article to see if she was a Republican or a Democrat. Though obviously no conclusions have been drawn at this early stage, whether it was politically motivated or not, and whether the shooter was a follower of Palin, I still wasn't surprised! We'll just have to stay tuned...
