It is needless to say that the onus is on both parties to ensure that their wedlock survives; through the bed of roses and the stormy, choppy waters. Hence, read the following without any gender in mind.
Tips you may find useful
You must never take your spouse for granted. Appreciate even the smallest gesture. Be it taking care of the kids, doing the laundry, running errands or cooking dinner. A simple "Thank you" or "you made my day" would be sufficient to light up the mood of your spouse. This much is not asking for to much.
Be sure to steal time. At least once a week, spend quality time with your spouse. How long has it been since you last dated? Keep your spouse as the top priority. Everything else comes second. Without your spouse, you do not have a family. So, acknowledge and keep it that way.
If your spouse is overseas , all the more you must keep in touch. Technology has advanced so much that we do not even need a phone to communicate. Instant messengers are there. Skype is perfect. SMS a "love you." If you want to connect, you will find a way to connect. Nothing is going to stop you. And when you are together, make up for the lost time.
Share and build you future together. You may be two individuals. However, with your union through wedlock or via agreement, you are now one soul. Plan together for a better future. No matter what the discussion is about. Come to a common understanding of you want the things to be done. This could be about when you want kids, if you already have, how to raise them, buying a new house, investing in stocks or even planning holidays. Do not belittle or hide things from your spouse. They have all the right to know.
Improve your sex life. Sex is part of a healthy marriage. Hence, the need to take extra efforts to ensure that the end of honeymoon period does not end your relationship as well. Dress up for your spouse. Try to spice up. Add a few surprises here and there. It is not necessary to have sex every day. Just huddling close to each other, feeling the heartbeat, running fingers through the hair and sorts will be just perfect. This signals that you are still going strong.
Take good care of your body. Regular exercises and good diet will take care of that. Remember the first advise of not taking your spouse for granted? This is precisely one aspect where you must not take your spouse for granted. He/she has every right to expect that you take good care of your body and look good for him/her. Moreover, it is a proven fact that a healthy body equates to healthy sex.
Every relationship has problems. But is it okay to keep shove it aside or forget about it for it to resurface again after a few days to trigger a new fight? Absolutely not. What you must ensure is that you solve your argument. Complain if you must. However, make sure that you follow it up and mend it. Work together to help the other party to resolve issues. Make changes for the both of you. There should never be a selfish motive for the complaining. If still the issues are not getting resolved, please get help.
The main point in all these pointers is communication. Communicate to connect you marriage. More often than not, communication is what is missing from the essence of married life. Once you have that sorted, you have your life sorted.
