Conroe, Texas: Houston's Playground

Where to Visit, Play and Relax in Conroe

Cheryl Engelke
Welcome to Conroe, TX! Conroe is the county seat in historic Montgomery county, birthplace of the Texas Flag. Established in 1884, Conroe has a rich history in the oil, lumber, and railroad industries. Located just 40 miles north of Houston, Conroe is known as Houston's playground. Nestled in the middle of the piney woods of Texas with a 22,000 acre lake, Conroe is an ideal place to come shop, relax, have fun, and raise a family. Steadily growing, Conroe still has that small town feel, despite the vast amounts of activities.

Want a little culture or History? Conroe offers plenty.

Let's start with the Creighton Theatre, Conroe's premiere live entertainment venue. Built in 1934, this wonderfully restored vaudeville-era theatre offers concerts, plays, musicals and the Sounds of Texas Music Series.

The nearby Owen Theatre is located in a recently renovated building from the 1940's. The Owen Theatre is home of the Creighton Players, Conroe's Community Theatre Group and the Creighton Kidz.

The Heritage Museum offers a look into the history of Conroe, Willis, and Montgomery and Texas. Heritage Park is an outdoor amphitheatre, located in downtown Conroe, has it's Free Summer Concert Series on the first Thursday of every month.

In nearby Montgomery, explore the NH Davis Pioneer Museum. Geared towards historic Montgomery from 1840-1890 when Texas was its own nation. Montgomery was one of the first towns in Texas. It was a trading post in 1826 and became a chartered town in 1837.

A little further down the road is Plantersville where you can be a part of the Famous Texas Renaissance Festival. People come from hours away to experience the ousting matches, great food and drink, and to be immersed in culture from days past.

Down on the lake, enjoy a Victorian era dinner cruise on the Southern Empress. Open for lunch cruises, dinner and dancing, or private parties, it is a great time to be had by all.

And if culture and history isn't your thing, Conroe has plenty of alternatives.

At Lake Conroe, you can put your boat in the water, catch some fish, or just play on the beach. There are tons of places for watercraft rentals if you don't have your own and plenty of live music and night life venues you can boat, ski, drive, or hog to; Papa's on the lake, Wolfies, and Sam's boat.

If water is not what you are looking for, how about a 140 mile hike in the Sam Houston National Forrest. The national forest also offers several campgrounds for primitive camping and RV camping and several multi-use trails for horses, ATV's, mountain and dirt bikes.

Located nearby in the Woodlands is the Montgomery County Preserve, 70 acres of bottomlands. They offer 2 hiking trails. The preserve is home to beavers, deer, rabbits, 17 butterfly species, and over 70 seasonal bird species.

Conroe also includes several parks, the 7 Acre Wood which includes mini golf and a petting zoo, King's Orchard and Moorhead's Farm where you can pick your own fresh fruits, 300 Bowl, and the Conroe Recreation and Aquatic Center which features a water park, swimming, racquetball, tennis, gymnasium and more for family fun.

For sports enthusiasts, Conroe has the Conroe Storm, the professional arena football team and the Montgomery County Bulls, a minor league professional football team. And GOLF!! Conore's scenic beauty includes several public and private golf courses.

Fine to casual dining abound and Conroe also includes several night life venues all around town and great shopping at the various outlet malls.

Don't forget to come on down the second weekend of October for Conroe's Cajun Catfish Festival, featuring live music, shopping, carnival, and all the catfish you can handle!!

My six "sponsor" friends and I very much enjoyed "Miss Saigon" the night of 9/4/2009. However, one of our names was badly mispelled in the program sponsor section. "EVerly" Seubert should be "Evelyn Seubert." Can it be corrected in future issues? Thank you! Karen Smith
