Conservatives - Can You Defend the Utah "hit List" Against Suspected Illegal Immigrants?

Jeff Musall
In what is perhaps the ugliest example of right-wing anti-immigrant sentiment being expressed to date, a list of 1300 persons suspected of being in the country illegally was circulated in Utah - and compiled by disgruntled state workers.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports two state employees with the Department of Workforce Services were placed on leave as part of an ongoing investigation into the illegal compromising of personal information that went into compiling the list.

"This tactic by these rogue employees to go out and single out individuals and their families and, in some cases, falsely accusing people of an illegal status is in fact deplorable and is in fact counterproductive to the issue that ought to be the focus, which is the illegal immigration issue," Gov. Gary Herbert said at a press conference.

If indeed found responsible, the state workers, and anyone who aided them in any fashion, need to be made an example of and prosecuted to the fullest extent. The message needs to be loud and clear - compromising personal information cannot be tolerated, and people compiling lists of their supposed enemies will be dealt with harshly.

What's next, making persons thought to be illegal wear some sort of Latino Star of David? Will they be forced from their homes and jobs, regardless of actual status? What will their Kristallnacht be? Burning of mobile Mexican food cater trucks? And will the scoundrels also hit Tex-Mex? When these things start, they often mushroom into something very ugly.

Not that status should even be a question in regard to compiling hit lists. It's wrong, no matter what the motivation. And what the bigots and tea totalers who support the list don't realize is once lists are compiled of enemies, who will be on the next one?

Thinking Americans are rightfully angry about the list, while the far right - not so much.

"It's probably against some privacy laws," Eli Cawley, Utah Minuteman Project co-chair, told Utah station KSL, "But I think in the interest of preserving our civilization, preserving our society and protecting the people of the state of Utah, I think that's a greater interest than protecting the privacy of some individuals."

Want to preserve our civilization and our society? End this ugly melodrama. Conservatives, I challenge you - explain to me how this is anything but an ugly, anti-American exercise.

Employees who have access to private info need to be carefully monitored for honesty. Sounds like they have a problem here.

Jeff, ooh, you've got Snidely. He trolls my articles occasionally with his right-wing hate-filled rhetoric. But he's good for page views as he keeps coming back, LOL. Absolutely agree with you. What's funny though is the Republicans are digging their own graves as they do these ridiculous things, turning off more and more voters who'll vote for Ralph Nader before they'll vote for this bunch of racist whackjobs.

Wrong on so many counts - these people weren't "whistleblowers" for one, and many on their hit list aren't illegal at all, and the list was publicized. Remember how righties flipped when it was learned there was information being gathered on potentially violent homemade terror groups? I would expect the outrage to be even more intense here - but oh, yea- it's just a bunch of "them" in this case, eh?

  • Snidely Whiplash7/20/2010

And yep JESSE, we'll use the EXACT SAME JUSTIFICATION used by PROGRESSIVES when they illegally access gov't stuff to out a conservative. Good for the goose and all that?

  • Snidely Whiplash7/20/2010

And aren't these people the much loved "Whistle Blowers" that you support when they reveal illegal info on conservatives? Jeff, are you being a hypocrite here Pal? Can I go back thru your catalog and find an article supporting whistle blowers because they outed a cons. for something? Bet I can. Ya know, used illegal info, ferreted out in a distinctly illegal manner, but since the "allegation is so important" well, we'll just overlook the illegal part, right Jeff? I am so glad you're back writing on AC. This is sport man.

  • Snidely Whiplash7/20/2010

Again, if a crime is committed make an arrest. If these folks merely reported those committing crimes, isn't that encouraged by government? And do you not always support government actions - well, I mean PROGRESSIVE gov't actions? If you just don't like it cause your hopeful newly minted Dem voters won't be, well...life's a bitch, ain't it Jeff?

I think that the way they went about it is indeed a gross mishandling of private information and perhaps if there was a plan, a chain of command, something set up to inforce the law... The point is is that they are ILLEGAL! The state/government should enforce the LAWS and deport these ILLEGALS instead of rewarding them for BREAKING the LAWS by giving them food, housing, medical etc... and turning a blind eye to these LAWBREAKERS! Granted, maybe not all of the people on the list are illegals and for those who aren't I feel sorry for them. The people that compiled the list should never have been in the position to make such a list. However, if the state refused to fund illegals there would be no illegals in the system to compile a list from in the first place. Yes Jesse, it's the same old song and it keeps playing because no one changes the tune!

  • Jesse Schmitt7/18/2010

yeah Jeff; and i'll tell you how they WILL defend this. They'll say "Oh these creeps who compiled the list were WRONG...(BUT)...they bring up important points" yaddiah yaddiah yaddiah...it's the same old song

"What's next, making persons thought to be illegal wear some sort of Latino Star of David?" Chilling - especially considering that some Hispanic families have been in the US since before it was the US.
