Conservatives and Liberals Have Different Core Beliefs

During my lengthy discussions with liberals, I have gained insight into the different core beliefs that are the "crux" of our disagreements. The following is an example of one core belief that separates liberals from conservatives.

Liberals believe that there are no moral absolutes. Liberals beleive that it is up to each individual to come up with a "moral code" that is right for him and his situation. For example: Liberals will justify stealing food if their family is hungry.

On the other hand, myself (and most conservatives) believe that there are moral absolutes (universal spiritual principles)that are just as relevant today as they were 5000 years ago. Morality does not change through time and circumstance. Conservatives believe that it is honorable to strive toward these spiritual ideals although we are incapable of fully reaching them. However, spiritual progress, not perfection can be achieved during our lifetime..

just passing through, universal spiritual principles are common sense. Like our inalienable rights, they do come from God. Don't you think that our creator gave us the ability to discern right from wrong? Just as He gave us the ability to procreate and the ability to provide for our needs.

let me guess... the absolute morality of the universe comes from the creator god of the jews (as refined by jesus christ, martin luther and whomever founded your subfaction of christianity) and everyone else is simply wrong about good and evil, right?

Emma, I don't know what times that you are talking about, However, in a time that women relied on a husband to provide for her family, a woman with child must marry to save her and her child's life. Are you talking about "shotgun weddings" for statutory rape? In any case these are much more humane remedies than killing the unborn child as many women do today.

It used to be moral to force a rape victim to marry her rapist, too.

Ttarler, Our actions on Earth also have eternal consequences. I am guided by those as well as the obvious ones.

I disagree slightly. I don't believe in absolute traits (virtue ethics) but I do believe in an absolute framework (consequentialist). I like to look at the consequences of my actions and make ethical judgements from there. In my experience, conservatives tend to look at either the intent of the moral actor, or certain characteristics of that character.

I don't know that stoning a misbehaving child was ever considered the righteous thing to do. However, in the olden days, they did not have the wealth to provide police, courts and prisons. Most people had to work long hard hours just to feed themselves, they had no money or desire to feed and house criminals. Most crimes needed o be dealt with on-the-spot. Harsh measures were their only choice.

ok, so morals don't change, then explain how stoning a misbehaving child is moral?
