Conservatives Rally Behind Obama, Seek Surtax on Wealthy to Pay for War?

Jeff Musall
President Barack Obama announced an increase of some 30,000 troops to be sent to Afghanistan. It's an escalation and deepening of involvement that will in effect transfer all the Bush and Cheney mistakes made in Afghanistan directly onto the shoulders of President Obama. The current Administration is saying, in effect, "you broke it, I'll fix it," much in the same way he has been forced to do so on the economy.

So, are conservatives around America rallying to the cause? Are Republican leaders right there behind President Obama, standing on the floors of Congress, popping in on Beck and Hannity to speak about the correctness of the Obama strategy? Of course they are, right?

And conservative leaders are seeking out to be "pay as we go" by proposing revenue measures to pay for additional troops in Afghanistan too, eh? I mean to be true to their newly-discovered "fiscal responsibility" demands their action, doesn't it? If they were intellectually honest they would.

Well, now that we have looked at a fairy tale scenario, let's discuss the real conservative response. Dick Cheney fired off his latest round of BS even before President Obama made his proposals. This is off on a tangent, but can anyone tell me why, every time we hear Dick Cheney speak it sounds like he is speaking through a voice box? Like some kind of auto-bot?

In the days to follow after President Obama elucidates his Afghanistan policy, look for everyone from Cheney to the Oklahoma fascist twins (Coburn and Inhofe) to all the little Palinites to bellow about how it will lead to the destruction of America. Don't expect supportive speech beyond "we support the troops, and of course a successful conclusion" to come out of one side of the mouth, something quite different out of the other.

Conservatives might just prove me wrong. I challenge them to do just that. Forget your petty partisan attacks and look at the policy for what it is, and either support it or don't on it's merits.

And once they do that for me, I will part the Red Sea and turn water into wine.

It appears more Republicans may be supporting the President's decision than Democrats/liberals (for example, Arianna Huffington is ready to tar and feather him). Personally, I think it was a good decision to send more troops (and send them quickly) - while also planning for a strategic/gradual withdrawal. However, it was a really stupid idea to announce the plans to those we are at war with, "Hey, good news guys. More troops or not, they're only going to be here eighteen more months!" And sorry Jeff, someone much more powerful than yourself beat you to the parting of the Red Sea and turning water into wine gig.

It wasn't too long ago that the Republirats were saying we were traitors if we did not support the president and the war plan. Hmmm... same war, different president, and who's not supporting whom?

I like the idea. They'll never be happy with Obama. I think you're right, Jesse.

And with this decision we can begin writing the history books....Barack Obama, one-term President from 2008-2012. Abandon all hope ye who enter here. Bring on 2012. C'mon Jesse. Run and we can get rid of the evil GOP and ultra-lame Dems who are ready, willing and able to push America right over the cliff with Beck, Rush and Palin.
