The following tips are designed to help the homeowner do just that. Improve energy conservation in the home and save on the costs of energy as a result.
Insulate
Insulate walls, ceilings, and floors. Industry minimum standards suggest 31/2" inches in walls, under floors, and over unheated spaces. Over ceiling areas, 6' is recommended. For improving energy conservation in the home, insulation is a must.
Storm doors and windows
Good quality storm doors and windows contribute greatly in preventing both heat loss and air leakage. Check with your local home-building supply center for ideas and applications best suited for your home.
Caulk
This is a perennial favorite not only because of the relative low cost and high efficiency, but of its ease of application. Be certain to use a good grade caulk around door frames and window frames. Handy squeeze tubes are available as well as cylinders for use in caulk guns. Again, check with your home center for the right product for the job.
Thermostat settings
Lower thermostat settings in unoccupied areas and keep the doors closed that are associated with them. In your efforts to improve energy conservation in the home, this will help greatly.
Hot water heaters
The installation of an insulating blanket around the hot water tank is another great way of improving energy conservation in the home. Also, keep the tank clean by flushing it out periodically. Consult the manufacturer's recommendations concerning prescribed intervals for the tank installed in your home.
Faucets
Installing low-flow faucets in the home reduces energy costs and saves energy and water at the same time. Water-saving shower heads can also make a difference resulting in savings realized with each and every use.
Look yourself and find ways to improve energy conservation in the home. When in doubt though, have a competent service person check and maintain the heating system and evaluate the home for areas that can be improved upon.
Improving energy conservation in the home is good for you, good for the community and good for everyone's environment.
Remember, always work safely.
