Conserve Natural Resources While You Welcome Nature to Your Yard

Sharyl Stockstill
Whether you have a large rural property, a small suburban home, a city lot, or just a small patio, you can do some things to help out the environment and enjoy nature in the process. The Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) is part of the United States Department of Agriculture. They have developed a series of tips and booklets for homeowners who want to make a difference in our environment with their "Backyard Conservation."

Add Beauty to Your Yard:

Help the environment by selecting plants and trees that will conserve water and help to stop erosion. There are a number of plants that are easy to grow that will provide a homeowner with a sense of pride and help the environment at the same time. The NRCS can provide assistance in determining which species of tree and plants are best suited for your location and your desire to add value and beauty to your surroundings.

Attract Wildlife to Your Yard:

Even small yards can be planned so that wildlife finds them attractive. Wildlife need shelter, food and water. Your yard can become a haven for birds and other animals. Your selection of plants will determine which type of animals will choose to make it a home. The "Backyard Conservation" series can help you determine which type of animal you want to attract and what those animals will need to make your home a haven. You can enjoy watching the wildlife from your window and know you are doing your part to make this world a better place.

Pest Management in Your Yard:

Not all wildlife is welcomed in a neighborhood. You may want to attract rabbits but avoid the skunks. There are certain things you can do to keep the pests from making your yard a home, too. While a number of butterflies make for an interesting back yard, you want to control mosquitoes and other pests. The tips in the "Backyard Conservation" series will help you attract the visitors you want while keeping the invaders at bay.

Do not forget to visit your local NRCS office. Here you will find technical assistance in planning a wonderful backyard habitat where you can enjoy nature and our natural resources.
