Consider an Extended Truck Warranty If You Buy and Hold Trucks

Sunny DuLane
My family are truck buyers. It seems when other people buy cars we buy trucks. Every day we use them driving hundreds of miles. One thing for sure, with good care and maintenance trucks can last for years. Reality will also tell you parts wear out with all the driving we do. So with all the driving, I always buy the extended warranty.

My family has had truck repairs caused by normal wear and tear over the past years. We didn't have to pay a thing. Now if we hadn't had the warranties...well I just don't want to think of how much it would have cost.

The first time I bought an extended warranty, I really wasn't sure. After all adding an extra $2000 to the sales price seemed like a lot. But when "funny noises" start coming from your engine, it's nice to know you can bring the truck to the mechanic and say, "Fix it," without worrying about how much it's going to cost.

For me, an extended warranty buys me peace of mind. It also lets me know I'm not going to have unexpected bills wrecking havoc with my budget.

Now there's a lot of different types of warranties out there. Some cover everything from basic maintenance like oil changes and all the electronic gadgets inside the truck as well. Other warranties are just for the powertrain, which means if your engine fails due to a defective engine part you're covered. Others don't include labor. So read the fine print and ask questions, lots of questions.

If you're only keeping your truck for a short time, then a warranty probably is not going to be cost effective. But if you drive your truck for many years then an extended truck warranty can provide not only peace of mind also control of your repair budget.

My truck is over ten years old. I love driving it and have taken great care of it throughout the years. In the time I've owned it I've used my warranty to replace the gas tank and the catalytic converter. Both of those items would have wrecked havoc with my planned budget.

Who shouldn't buy an extended warranty for a new truck? People who don't plan to own their truck for over three years. People who don't mind paying cash for each and every repair. But if you're like me and take care of your trucks and hold onto them for a while then an extended warranty may be a good idea for you. You just never know when an extended warranty might come in handy.
