Factors to Consider when Selecting a Program

Thomas West
A Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) Certificate provides you with the skills necessary to teach English to students in foreign countries, and as such is a tremendously exciting and stimulating opportunity. Before leaping into the fray, however, you should take time to consider some of the various factors that make a good certificate program. The following are some of the most important things to consider when choosing a TEFL Certificate Program.

The Location of the Program
One of the most important factors to consider when choosing a TEFL Certificate is the location of the program. Different countries have different learning styles and systems, and in order to be able to effectively communicate with students in a given country it is best to know as much as possible about the country in which you are living. In addition, choosing an appropriate location can also help you get accustomed to the culture of the country in which you will be living.

Accreditation
When looking at TEFL Certificate programs, be sure to check the kinds of work that the certificate will entitle you to do. It is best if you find a program that will allow you to teach internationally and that is fully recognized by the country in which you would eventually like to teach. Furthermore, be sure to find a program that has been independently reviewed by other professionals in the field. This will ensure that you are participating in a program that has a substantial reputation, which in turn will increase your likelihood of being hired.

Rigor of the Program
When choosing a TEFL certificate program, be certain to choose a program that is sufficiently rigorous to ensure that you are effectively challenged. Some suggest that you enroll in a program that offers at least 100 hours of training, to ensure that you are as prepared as possible for your eventual teaching position. If possible, you should also choose a program that allows you to have hands-on experience in a real-time teaching environment, to ensure that you have the support you need in this crucial time.

If you consider these factors when choosing a TEFL certificate program, you'll get a great deal more out of the program. Even more importantly, when you enter into your teaching position you will be fully prepared to be an excellent teacher and professional. You will most certainly engage in one of the most rewarding professions: teaching.
