Considerations to Make Before Contacting Collection Agencies for Your Small Business

As a former business consultant, and current business writer, I have been asked regularly about collection agencies and small businesses. There are potential issues that small business owners keep in mind before they contact, or contract, a collection agency to take over their delinquent debts.

Alienation

If you have a number of outstanding debts that you need to collect, remember that if you send a collection agency after your customers, they will probably never forget it. Even though these customers might not tell their friends that you sent a collection agency after them, they are likely to talk down about your company. Stories of poor customer service from your small business can sprout from those with delinquent debts.

Method

Every collection agency goes about collecting the delinquent debts differently. Make sure that you fully understand the methodology of the collection agency that you are planning on using before having them go after your small business's delinquent debts. If you do not have faith in their methods, or are nervous about them in any way, look into another company first.

Return

Make sure that you have a clear understanding of exactly how much of a delinquent debt will be returned from what is collected. Some collection agencies have certain fees that can dwindle the amount of a return to a small business. Make sure that it is even worth handing an account over to them first.

Read the Contract

Make sure that you read the contract over carefully with the collection agency. Make sure that you small business still retains the rights that you want. Sometimes, if a person is contacted by a collection agency, they will try to settle the debt with the small business involved. Make sure that you can still collect a debt like this yourself without having to give a portion to the collection agency.

All Accounts

Some collection agency contracts will require you to turn over all debts that go delinquent after a certain number of days. Avoid contracts that require you to hand over all delinquent accounts as you could be contractually bound to turn over clients and customers that you have special arrangements with.

Don't Be Pressured

Many debt collection agencies have high-pressure salespeople that are paid on commission and what you to make a decision before they leave your office. With the number of issues that could be at stake for your company, do not rush into anything. Make sure that you take a few extra days to weigh your options, and the methods of the company involved.
