Learning about candidates on the ballot is not the only important task when trying to be an informed person on the issues. As of the early 1990's major changes have been underway for those who can run and what represents their structure of systematic political views. With four party categories outside of the normal successors, the Republican and Democratic, the ballot is now filled with an overwhelming amount of debate for who best fits into office. Taking a look at the points of view concluded in those parties can give voters a deeper appreciation for their beliefs. Two of the most popular California alternatives are the Peace and Freedom and Green parties.

Peace and Freedom Party

The original political party began in the 1960's and hosted the first African American who ran on the presidential ballot, Dick Gregory. Since the party has taken different direction and fought to maintain the required amount of voters needed to be registered as an official choice for ballot. Their system is known as the social party which aims for equal rights to all minorities. Such as sexual discrimination, free abortion rights, own sexual preferences, protection of environment, and fights against corruption. Their biggest success had been in counties like Almeda, Monterey, Berkeley, and Sonoma where candidates of the party have been elected to councils and boards dealing with regulations of fairness for its citizens. Currently for the 2010 ballot 7 candidates are running for executive offices, and over a dozen more are running for Senate seats and Assembly chairs.

Green Party

This system of politics has it begin in 1992, and was partly a motivation for worldwide environmental movements. A global Green party is established in most European countries and various other international systems. The main goal of the Green party is to reduce the negative impact the human civilization has on the biosphere. The theory of the Green party beliefs goes back into the roots of the late 1970's and deeply into separating four pillars and ten key values. The first, the four pillars, is meant to represent the movements of activism in: Peace, Environment, Civil Rights, and Labor issues. The Green party is ranked at number four in the United States, when compared other system. While not noticed in California's political scene as much as others in 2008 candidates won elections in Arkansas for the House of Representatives. Since 1996 the party has been on major ballots with candidates such as Ralph Nader, who ran for president twice.
