Sony's Playstation 2, which, as a gaming system, has been showing its age ever since Microsoft released its first version of the Xbox console.
Trying to regain the technological lead, Sony adopted Microsoft's strategy, which was to build a console that integrated many cutting-edge components, regardless of the cost of production. As a result of the high manufacturing cost of its new gaming platform, the Playstation 3, Sony has opted to sell the console at a lowered rate for consumers-in effect, loosing money on every transaction, in the hope that major profits will be made on the actual games. So far, this is a strategy that Microsoft has shown can work both for the consumer, who is able to buy a console for a much cheaper price; and for the manufacturer, since the market appears to be able to bear the high prices demanded for individual games.
Marketing strategies aside, which console is better? The question can be addressed in three ways: Which has the better technology? Which has the better games? Which is a better value?
Technology:
Processors: In terms of processing speed, both consoles feature a 3.2GHz processor and 512 megs of RAM. As far as testing goes, however, it appears that the Playstation 3 has a slight speed advantage; which is no surprise, if one takes into account that the technology is newer. Sony has, nonetheless, managed a small coup in the arena of processing, considering that one of the main selling points of the Xbox and Xbox 360 have been their superior processing power. In the final analysis, however, the speed advantage that Sony's Playstation 3 enjoys is probably not significant enough to persuade consumers.
High-Def Capability: In the area of extras, it appears that Sony has, once again, gained the lead. The new Playstation 3 offers a next-generation Blu-ray player, which gives the console the ability to play movies at HD quality (true 1080i), with the expanded capacity of Blu-ray disks (about six times the information capacity as a conventional DVD). Microsoft plans to release an HD-quality player for the Xbox 360 later this year, but consumers will have to purchase the player separately, as an add-on component, for about $200.
Online Services: In the past, both consoles have offered online gaming services. The clear winner in this competition, however, has been, and will probably continue to be Microsoft. Of course, no one should be surprised by Xbox's domination of the online venue, given their expertise in the technological arena. One should keep in mind, though, that online gaming is not every gamer's "cup-of-tea." Therefore, choose your console based on the gaming habits of the intended recipient.
Games:
Game quality is clearly the most subjective element of decision-making. Both gaming platforms have had their "blockbuster" titles, so the choice comes down to preference. One caveat will server here: The Xbox 360 has been out for nearly a year now, which obviously means that it has a greater number of titles right now. If you are looking for a quick "out-of-the-box" experience, and a relatively large number of games, Xbox 360 is the right choice. If, however, you are willing to be a little bit patient, Sony's Playstation 3 will eventually catch up. Traditionally, Sony's console has generated more titles than Microsoft's Xbox, and this trend will most likely continue.
Value:
Value is a relative term here. Neither console is inexpensive. The Playstation 3 will cost consumers around $600 this Christmas. The Xbox 360 costs around $400. With the Playstation 3, one gets a Blu-ray, HD-quality player (the first dedicated Blu-ray player from Samsung will sell for around $1,000 this season), a 60-Gbyte Hard Drive, wireless controller, built-in Bluetooth and wireless capability, and memory card readers. Alternately, the Xbox 360 comes with a 20-Gbyte Hard Drive (there are cheaper versions of the Xbox 360 without a Hard Drive, but they are not worth purchasing), and a wireless controller. A wi-fi adapter will cost an extra $100, and, as mentioned above, if you want an HD player, be prepared to shell out an additional $200.
In short, the Xbox 360 is a better value, if you are happy to settle for a basic configuration, amazing games, and a wonderful online environment. If, on the other hand, you want to start adding on to the capabilities of the Xbox 360, the $600 price-tag for the Playstation 3 starts looking pretty good. The good news for fans of the Xbox 360, however, is that in the past Microsoft has initiated price-cuts after a year on the market, which means that we might see a more competitive pricing scheme introduced for the Christmas season.

Post a Commentblu-rays pretty overrated HD s more than fine, ps3 has useless features any real gamer would crap on, to top it of sony offers a crappy online community full of the ps3 fan boys here
listen i recently had a ps3 and yes the free wifi and internet gaming is sick but when it comes to easier precision xbox takes the lead ps3s controller is hard to wrap your hands around you end up getting a cramp and u sometimes have to hit the analog stick hard for it to follow back to xbox simple taps work yeah ps3 can create a better controller if they want but when microsoft creates the next xbox the tec will most likely be better xbox is working with netflix and microsoft microsoft makes computer software xbox contains alot of this material like high def fast processing and ect ps3 however is trying so hard in areas we dont pay attenction in that their forgettin the basics like screen play its so sentitive when you dont need it that when you go to play the game is 20x harder ps3 if you ask me needs to foucus more on game software and stop trying to make games more hd because t.vs carry this quality already another thing is that when your online servers timeout alot you have to sig
To hell with Xbox... keep sucking my balls with your "battery-powered-controllers" damn... I am telling you Xbox hound dogs, MICROSOFT IS EATING YOUR WALLET ALIVE! maybe xbox 360 is a $50 cheaper but how many things are not there when you compare it to PS3???
Xbox 360: $50 online fee, no blu ray player (the newest format in awesome movie viewing), also paying for shitty low tech batteries, and i heard someone say buying a wifi receiver something... so your $249 becomes more than $500 now...
PS3: all of missing in xbox 360 for only $299... how cheaper is that when you see it...
So if i were you, i would choose the best coz money doesn't grow on trees you know, and it HELL doesn't come from Microsoft too...
All i can say is that the PS3 owns the XBOX 360... just look at the features XBOX HOUND DOGS! you would be doing your mom a favor by buying a blu ray player in your home... and MICROSOFT, WHY DID YOU LET THE CONTROLLERS OF XBOX 360 RUN ON BATTERIES??? HELLLOOOO!!!! THIS IS THE 21st CENTURY! Nice try..maybe Microsoft is trying to reduce global warming or stuff like that... but for me... PS3 is no. 1 and Xbox, i can say maybe at the 30th place... behind Sega dreamcast... that's how low i think of XBOX! XBOX 360 SUCKS!
@ Diehard PS3 Fan: you are not doing PS3 any favour with that childish atitude. I hope gamers understand that inviduals like these do not represent PS3 community.
I have every gaming console you can imagine and I currently own two PS3s, one backwards comp and one that's not. (One for home theater and one for gaming). It's a no-brainer who's going to win this war. The technology is there to exploit the heck out of the PS3, but developers have held back. XBOX's games are still on DL DVD's, if developers really cared they could make a killer game on Bluray (PS3's disk format) and stomp any XBOX game. A Bluray disk can hold at a minimum of 25GB, use up that for a game with some killer graphics and there's no way xbox could compete. The maximum size game they could make is 8.5GB. We definitely know the PS3 could handle a 25GB game or even a 50GB game. Something like a killer Final Fantasy Massive Multiplayer Online to say, "hell ya!" "Eat that Microsoft." They would have no option but to market a whole new system. Oh wait, Bluray is now the accepted format for future high-def media. I believe Sony was behind Bluray technology. So Microsoft will have
OK so basicly people who agree with the ps3 talk about its blue tooth free online but this doesnt mean its the best who cares about this consoles are for games and stuff and ps3 has weak online and 360 you can always find a fun match plus alot of the early ps3 games didnt have online..Xbox 360 is the better console
will end up having to pay 100 more bucks for the wireless network connector. which in the end is the price for a ps3 with blue ray and wifi which is its form of internet connection....so idk either waste 400 bucks on a PS3 or waste 400 bucks on a 360 & the wireless connector.
Also if i didnt mention it already you can pay 8$ for 1 month of xbox live 20 bucks for 3 months or 50 bucks for a whole year. but you dont need to pay anything for the ps3 multiplayer.
Also the ps3 updates are pretty sweet idk about 360 but ps3 updates itself so idk about that....
yea idk choice is really yours........either that or get the psp or ds since its soooooo light it only ways like 1 pound right???......freakin idiot.....
the ps3 has unneeded technology! Who cares if it has blu-tooth and blu-ray! That doesn't make the console better, it just makes it heavier! And the ps3 is heavy!!! 15 pounds! You've got to be kidding me, ps3 can suck my balls! Xbox is still the best console to be made, and it will stay that way forever! Sony has nothing on the Xbox 360
HD dvd is dead and so is xbox 360 right along with it. Sony's technology is far more superior. Blu-ray, blu-tooth, and wi-fi alone set the ps3 in a different class not to mention the six axis controllers. Wow! This thing is a supercomputer considering that you can even run linux on these things which makes your internet operate even faster. (FYI linux is an operating system like wndows xp). So basically a computer included without the keyboard and mouse. LOL. The war is over and xbox 360 is dead so start saving your money for a ps3 you boxheads!!!
