Constipation During Pregnancy

Constipation occurs midway through late pregnancy because your growing uterus is taking up part of the working space of your digestive system. Intestinal movement is also slowed by hormones. In some cases, iron and vitamin supplements may contribute o constipation.

If you are experiencing constipation, here are a few things you can try that may help.

Drink lots of water. Water is good for you and it is good for your baby. It is recommended that you drink eight to ten glasses of fluids daily. Water helps soften stool inside your sytem.

Eat raw vegetables, fruits, and whole grain cereals and bread daily. This ensures you are getting enough fiber. Prunes, dates, and figs are also beneficial.

Don't strain! Try to take some time for a bowel movement. Go when you have the urge, don't force it. The key is to go when you feel you need to, and relax as much as possible during.

Daily exercise makes a huge difference in bowel movements. Increased exercise (or at least daily exercise) helps get your system moving. Pregnant women are not encouraged to do rigorous exercises, however a simple daily walk will refresh you and help with any constipation issues.

Avoid mineral oil. It can remove vitamins A, D, and E from your body. If you feel that you need a laxative, consult with your health care provider. Don't use a laxative, or over the counter methods without consulting with your doctor first!

Ask your doctor if you should use any stool softeners. Stool softeners, which act only in the digestive tract, are not irritating or habit forming.

Remember that constipation, like many other pregnancy related discomforts, will usually dissolve once your sweet bundle of joy arrives!
