Constructing Learning Objectives that Align with State Standards and Instructional Goals

Shannon
Below I have created an example of instructional goals, learning objectives and justifications for the objectives that I have selected. The content area for this example will be Science. It will cover content for 6th grade students. The topic will be Geological Landforms. I will be using the Sunshine States Standards for 6th grade Science. The specific standard that will be used is Benchmark : SC.6.E.6.2. This benchmark states that students will recognize different landforms and be able to recognize landforms that are in Florida.

Instructional goals:

1. Students will understand the name of different landforms and be able to recognize them..

2. Students will understand how various types of landforms were created.

3. Students will be able to describe and name local landforms.

Three learning objectives for each instructional goal:

Students will understand the name of different landforms and be able to recognize them..

1. Students will identify form by reading textbook and using glossary to define words. Students will define 30 landforms correctly.

2. Students will locate and label different landforms on a map. Students will successfully label 20 different landforms correctly on a topographic maps

3. Students will be able to identify at least 15 different landforms via pictures. They will be given a worksheet that has pictures of 25 different landforms.

The objectives for this goal lead the students to mastery of the goal. All three objectives naming different landforms. Students will know the definition of different landforms. Students will also know what these landforms look like These objectives encourage critical think skills; students will have to recall the definitions of landforms and match them to images.

Students will understand how various types of landforms were created.

1. Students will read-out -load or follow along in their text books, as we read about how different land forms are created. Students will then answers 10 questions correctly about the chapter that was read. (Question located at end of chapter in book)

2. Students will work in groups of 5 to create landforms portfolios. Each groups will be assigned 15 landforms. Students are reasonable for creating a description for each. Naming a location in which each land form can be found . Students will also create a drawn picture of each land form. Students will put all required information on one page per land form.

3. Students will complete a worksheet, were they will match different types of landforms to conditions that created them. Students will successfully match 25 landforms to the conditions that created them.

These objectives are aliened with instructional goal number 2 and meet one of The Sunshine States standards. Students will use their prior knowledge of different landforms to gain an understand of how they are created. These objectives require students recall the names and definitions of different landforms. Students will learn what causes different landforms to be formed via reading and repetition.

Students will be able to describe and name local landforms

1. Students will view local maps and name different landforms. Students will name a minimum of 10 local landforms.

2. Students will be given pictures of landforms that are located in the state of Florida. Students will then write a paragraph identifying and describing the landforms. Students will write two paragraphs hypothesizing what may have caused the landforms , students will support their hypotheses with facts. Finally, students will try and located their landforms on a map of Florida.

3. Students will work in groups of five to create land form mobiles. Students will research five landforms that are local. Students will hen write a paragraph about each and draw a picture to attach to their mobile.

These objectives will help students to meet benchmark SC.6.E.6.2. That requires them to know the names of local and sate landforms. These objectives require students to build on their prior knowledge o landforms. These objectives require students to find and name local landforms. They also requirements to be able to recognize and describe local landforms.
