Constructing a Small Pen for Rabbits

Tutorial and Guide for Animal Care

Constructing a pen or an enclosure seems interesting, yet fun at the same time. Assuming one knows how to follow instructions properly and precisely, the project becomes fairly easy to accomplish. The rabbits put in the pen become thankful because they will have the ability to run around instead of just sitting in a cage all day. The project consists of six simple steps. The first thing: get the materials necessary to build the pen. Then, find a place where to construct. In the following step, insert the poles. Then, put the fence up. Next, make any changes necessary, mainly touch-up work. And finally, insert the rabbits into the pen.

Obtain the following: live rabbit(s), chicken wire (twenty-five feet by two feet), wooden poles (at least four skinny ones and three feet tall), gloves (for safety), pliers, hammer and nails (finished or standard) or staples (choose which to use). A protractor can help, but considered optional. Purchase the supplies at a local hardware store. And, of course, common sense!

Find an area of which to place the pen. Select a location outside. Never construct the pen around dangerous plants since they may cause the rabbit(s) to get ill. Also, look for holes in the ground or an escape path for the rabbit(s). If the area has holes, or harmful objects lying on the ground (namely debris), then build the pen elsewhere. Do not endanger the animal(s). Have the materials placed outside and ready for use.

After selecting the building site, begin construction. Put the gloves on right now. Take the hammer at one corner of the pen with the three-foot pole and pound the pole into the ground roughly one foot deep. Which means, at least one foot in the ground and two feet above ground. Make sure the pole stands erect, and not slanted. Begin to walk in a straight line until the next corner of which to place another pole. The distance walked depends on the size of the pen and the amount of wire. So, if one had bought the twenty-five feet long wire, then walk approximately five paces to reach the next corner. Perform the previous step on inserting the pole into the ground, and turn right. Repeat the walking-step until the pen has four-corners. Which means, walk around in a circle (made of constant right turns), and place poles in the ground at each corner using the hammer. The formation of the four poles should generate a rectangle or square (with either present, stop placing poles and walking). Assuming one wants precision, then each corner will contain exactly ninety degrees (a right angle). Use the protractor to measure the angles. The interior angles will add to three hundred sixty degrees. However, if precision does not matter, disregard the last two sentences.

In the next step, prepare the wiring. Purchase the wire for an inexpensive price; yet ensure the wire's effectiveness in keeping the rabbit(s) in the pen. Use chicken wire, or replace the chicken wire with another wire of choice, which meets the measurement requirements (hopefully not anything with large gaps). Unwrap the wire from any packaging. Straighten out the wire to check for enough wire to build the pen. Without enough wire, go back to the store for more. Stretch the wire from one pole to the next. Do not create an oblique line with the wire. Once stretched out, just place the wire on the ground. Glance at the pen, the pen should have at least a square or rectangle mapped out. Without a square or rectangle formation, go make corrections as needed. Pickup some nails or staples along with the hammer. Then, go back and pick up the wire at one pole. Nail or staple the wire securely to each of the poles at the corners. If any other poles used, attach the fence to them as well. The fence should stand two feet tall. Do not bend the fence for any reason. The bottom of the wire should gently touch the ground.

Currently, the enclosure has a foundation. The enclosure forms a rectangle or square with the wire attached to the poles. Review all work, if unsatisfied make corrections. If anything went wrong, re-read the directions. Walk around the pen with pliers in hand and check for any parts of the wire sticking out and cut the sharp tips off. Once completely satisfied, gently place the rabbit(s) into the pen and put away all the tools. Trash any garbage generated from the project. Never forget to clean up after yourself.

Smile; take pride in the new pen. The tasks performed result in not too tedious of a project for someone to follow. With a completed pen, the rabbit(s) may now live outside of a cage and have the ability to run around inside his new pen. He becomes less crowded and happier. Constructing a pen serves practical matters. Place other small animals into the pen if desired to incorporate them with the rabbit(s), thus making the small pen multifunctional.
