Construction Paper Flowers: An Alternative to Traditional Mother's Day Cards for Preschoolers

A Fun Preschool Craft Project that Makes a Great Mother's Day Gift

Are you helping a child make a Mother's Day card for their mom? Whether you are a dad, a grandparent, or a daycare provider, you should know that you have a number of different options. One of those options is to make a construction paper flower, as opposed to a traditional Mother's Day card. Doing so is a fun, creative, and unique way for the child in your life to show their love and appreciation for their mother.

Supplies You Will Need:

Green Paint and a Paint Brush
Disposable Foam or Paper Cup
Popsicle Stick
Glue Stick
Colored Construction Paper (Two Different Colors)
Scissors

Although the supply list makes this Mother's Day craft project seem like a huge task, the directions are actually quite easy.

Directions:

1 - Cut a small slit in the bottom of the disposable cup. This is where you will later insert the popsicle stick.

2 - Have the child or children paint their cups green.

3 - While the paint is out, also paint the popsicle stick green. Both sides can be painted.

4 - Cut out four small to medium sided hearts. Using two different sheets of colored construction paper (like pink and yellow) adds extra color.

5 - Have the child or children glue the bottom parts of the hearts. Then, help them arrange them to create a flower like shape.

6 - Have the child glue the construction paper flower to the green popsicle stick.

7 - Insert the popsicle stick into the slot that you cut earlier.

To have this Mother's Day craft replace a Mother's Day card, you will want to personalize it with a message. The phrases "Happy Mother's Day," or "I Love You," should be enough. If the child in question can write, let them write their own message.

In keeping with personalization, there are a number of steps that you can take. You can do so on a separate sheet of paper and paste it into the middle of the flower. The message also can be glued or taped to the side of the cup. This approach is nice if the child is writing themselves, as preschoolers often write large.

It is also important to note that there is a much easier approach when making this Mother's Day craft project. The approach outlined above is the most creative, but it can be time consuming. If you are looking for a quick project, instead of painting the cup green, wrap it in aluminum foil. Instead of painting the popsicle stick green, the child can use a green marker to color it.

As a reminder, this preschool craft project is actually a lot easier than it looks or sounds. Once you and the child get started with making it, you will see how easy it actually is.
