Consumer Product Safety Recalls Entertainment Centers by Ameriwood and Nordic Track and Reebok Inversion Benches

Child's Death Leads to One Recall

Janice Villa
According to a press release today, December 5, 2007 from the Consumer Product Safety Commission a voluntary recall is being made for the Ameriwood Entertainment Center and the Nordic Track and Reebok Inversion Benches . Bleow are descriptions of both products.

Ameriwood Entertainment Center

Appoximately 138,000 entertainment centers manufactured by Ameriwood Industries Inc., of Tiffin, Ohio were sold at various mass merchandisers nationwide, including K-Mart stores, from June 2000 through May 2005. Each unit was sold for about $200.

The reason for the recall is that the entertainment centers can collapse if the back panel is not secure. This can pose a risk of death or serious injury to consumers. One fatality, a 19 month old child, has been reported when the product collapsed on the child. There have been three other minor injuries reported involving this entertainment center.

These entertainment centers are black with two lower miter-framed doors. They have two glass doors at the top with CD storage racks. They measure 54 inches wide, 71 inches high, and 20 inches deep. They were sold under the brand name of Ridgewood/Charleswood. You will find the model number 93956 on the instruction manual. If you have this entertainment center in your home you should immediately stop using it and contact Ameriwood to receive a free support panel repair kit.

For further information you can call Ameriwood toll-free at (877) 732-8252 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. CT Monday through Friday. You can also log on to their web site at: www.ameriwood.com.

Nordic Track and Reebok Inversion Benches

Approximately 22,000 units of these inversion benches manufactured in China and distributed byIcon Health & Fitness Inc., of Logan, Utah were sold at various sporting goods stores nationwide from September 2006 through January 2007. Each Inversion bench sold for about $200.

The reason for the voluntary recall is that the ankle clamp mechanism can release unexpectedly. This would pose a fall hazard to consumers using the bench. The recalled inversion benches invert a user by securing the ankles in a locking device and rotating the bench.

There have been 5 reported incidents of injuries to people using the inversion benches including contusions, lacerations and back pain.

The models recalled are:

Nordic Track bench
Model # 831.14595.0

Reebok bench
Model # RBBE1996.0

You can easily locate the model number by looking under the seat of the bench.

If you have these products in your home you should stop using the inversion benches immediately. You will need to contact the firm to receive a free repair kit. You can call Icon Health & Fitness at their toll-free at (866) 506-9095 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. MT Monday through Friday.
