Consumer Review: Swiffer WetJet Mop

Stephanie
Other than a mop and bucket, there really hasn't been much of a technological advance in the last 50 years when it comes to cleaning your floors. That is until the Swiffer WetJet Mop. I will review its effectiveness, its drawbacks, and give it a grade for your home.

The Swiffer WetJet Mop

What is it:

A battery powered (uses AA batteries) mop which uses a cleaning solution and textured pads to clean different floor surfaces.

Cost:

Around $20, but they have been on sale recently for $17 locally, and swiffer.com offers coupons.

Includes:

The starter kit includes the mop, 2 cleaning pads, instructions, and 1 bottle of multi-purpose cleaning solution. You can purchase replacement cleaning pads and cleaning solution in stores (around $4 for solution and $5 for 12 cleaning pads).

Why it's great:

The WetJet offers 3 different cleaning solutions for different floor types, and they all smell wonderful. They offer an antibacterial solution as well, so you can kill germs. The cleaning pad sticks with Velcro and is easy to remove when done. I use the WetJet on hardwood floors, and I have seen good results. The cleaning solution sprays evenly, and the scrub pad does work to clean the floors. There is also a tough scrubbie attached to the top of the head so you can work on tough stuck-on grime. When you are finished, you toss the pad and you are done. The bottle of cleaner lasts for about 5 rooms, depending on the size. The mop is especially great for fresh spills.

Drawbacks:

The mop can clean, and I find there is no residue or stickiness, but for a really dirty floor, I still find a regular mop to do a better job. If you have a not-so-fresh stain or stuck-on mess, even the scrubbie won't do the job. Also, if you like the long-lasting fresh scent of a mopped floor, you won't get it using the WetJet. It smells very clean while using, but as soon as the solution dries, the fresh scent is gone. If your floor has grooves or grout, the mop doesn't really get in the space like a regular mop can. And if you have a big mess, you will use more cleaning pads, resulting in having to buy more. The swiffer website advises not to use on waxed floors either.

Overall grade: B+

The Swiffer WetJet mop is a great cleaner for a small spill or quick clean, but I would definitely not toss my mop and bucket for it. I find it to be a less cumbersome product to lug from room to room, and while the floor is cleaner afterwards, you cannot replace the good old elbow grease scrubbing a regular mop and bucket can give. Save this mop for a college student gift, or someone who can't physically do it the old-fashioned way.

Currently a stay-at-home mom, and college student, I am finding out there is more than a mess to be found at the bottom of the laundry hamper.  View profile

I am very dissappointed in the Wetjet. It is a drag to use and I HAVE gone back to my old Liberman mop. I does a better job twice as fast. I want the guarantee on Wetjet to refund my money.

Been using Swiffer on tile floors for a couple of years now. Does a so so job of cleaning! Expensive and not entirely effective. Still have to hand scrub floors to get them clean. Use your Swiffer then with a clean white paper towel wipe a spot on the floor again, the towel will show dirt. Handle broke off on the first one within the first 9 months of use and now the same thing happened to the replacement. Done with this cleaning system!!

What would we have done without the internet? Our swiffer also stopped working, though just a week ago it was working. Thought the batteries were dead, but couldn't find them. Took off as many screws as I could, even found something to unscrew a few that weren't standard screws, accidentally got stabbed where it shows don't put your hands, thought our model was too old because it didn't match any of the pictures...if it wasn't for this site and so many people finding their battery packs on the floor, I never would have checked. I thought, okay, may as well check there, but didn't think I would actually find it. BUT, it was there. Thanks for all of the posts--I wouldn't have checked but so many people found theirs.

Swiffer mop is an absolute ripoff and certainly not worth the $20 dollars that I paid for it. The cleaning solution has a very unpleasant odor that lingers long after the 'cleaning' And cleaning it does NOT. The mop simply spreads the dirt around after the pad becomes damp-leaving streaks of dirt at the leading edge of the pad itself. Necessary to go back and forth trying the 'capture' what the mop left behind. Prior to using this worthless "mop" I swept the floors mentioned-bathroom and kitchen.

A handled mop with a squeege works four timess as well with one quarter the cost.

PS, Sticky residue left behind by the solution.

Swifter mop and its accessories( cleaner, pads) are costly and not worth the money.Unable to lift a bucket of water or get down to thouroughly scrub the floors, I resorted to trying the Swifter mop, although it was not within my budget. I have tried using more solution, using less solution, and using three pads to clean one room. Each time I end up with dirty streaks. When I use a towel to dry the floor, the towel becomes as dirty as the pad I used. With two elderly people in our house, we don't get the floors excessively dirty and I always sweep thoroughly before mopping. I will dispose of the mop and consider it a bad investment.

This product is for lazy people. It doesn%27t clean well at all and can%27t come close to what a good bucket of water and a mop can do. The commercials are totally misleading. Anyone who%27s actually ever scrubbed a floor knows that.

The citrus cleaning solution we used in our swiffer wetjet caused the velcro on the mop head to come with the cleaning pad.We cannot use it anymore, nothing to hold the pad in place!
