Consumer's Guide to Car Insurance for Older Vehicles

Candice W.

If you've just purchased an older model vehicle, the next step is to find the right insurance coverage.

As you shop around for car insurance for an older vehicle there are many things to consider. How much coverage do you need and how much do you want to spend on premiums?

Because you're driving an older vehicle, you can get a less expensive rate on comprehensive car insurance. Comprehensive auto insurance includes coverage on damage or theft. Since your older car won't have as high of a replacement value, then you should be able to get a much lower premium rate on your older vehicle. Having the full coverage will provide peace of mind.

A cheaper option would be to purchase no fault insurance through your auto insurance company. It is less expensive than comprehensive plans. If you are tight on money, then this most likely will be the best option for you. You can save the money you would have spent on comprehensive vehicle insurance and use it to purchase your next vehicle.

There are 12 states that require motorists to have no fault insurance coverage as part of their automobile insurance coverage. This is the minimum coverage that is allowed in those states.

The states Florida, Michigan, New Jersey and Pennsylvania have a verbal threshold while Hawaii, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Dakota and Utah have a monetary threshold, which is shown in the amount of a person's medical bills. The states of New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Kentucky have a choice no fault law. In these states vehicle owners can reject the lawsuit threshold and sue for auto-related injuries.
