Search engine optimization (SEO) has become a necessity for the business that seeks to survive in today's web surfing society. Consumers are turning to the Internet to research products and services, read reviews from other customers, and shop at any time of the day from the comfort of their own home. Every business under the sun has a website, which leaves many business owners wondering how to excel in the fiercely competitive world of online commerce. SEO seems to be the only answer.

What is Search Engine Optimization?

Search engine optimization is the process of tweaking a web page so that it stands a better chance of being noticed by a search engine and potential customers. Search engines use software known as spiders that crawl through a website and collect information about its content.

Several factors help categorize websites for spiders, such as URL addresses, the website's title or header, listed keywords, the content of the page, and links to other websites as well as links to the page from other websites.

Spider crawlers do not recognize text in the form of graphics and may not recognize links that are not absolute or have a complete URL listed which can be accessed should a link fail to work properly. Honest SEO companies can target these areas to improve a website's ranking in a search engine results.

Another popular SEO tactic is to exchange links with competing websites. That's right, you want to link to your competitors to provide relevant links for your customers. This is where a quality product, service and unique content are used to distinguish your site from the competition.

The ultimate goal of SEO is to rank the highest on a search engine results page for a given topic or keyword. Consumers will see websites optimized for search engines over other sites.

Why Optimize a Website?

Google is the search engine of choice for many individuals because of its commitment to provide relative results with high quality content. Other search engines like Yahoo, Inktomi, MSN, and AOL are also used but Google is considered the best. Google uses innovative software to help ensure that when a person searches for "blue Volkswagen Bug", the person doesn't see links to websites about irrelevant content.

Google's process uses "Page Rank" ™ software that not only assesses how many links lead to a website but the quality of those sites hosting the link as well. The content of the entire page, not just its keyword saturation, is evaluated. Relevance to the search topic has more weight than how many times keywords appear in the web page text.

Content Counts

Google's process of ranking pages means that the content on your pages matters to your ranking. As they say in the virtual world, content is king. Scrimping on good quality content and focusing solely on SEO tactics won't get you to the top of the Google ranks. All webmasters should read and follow search engine guidelines. Ignoring them may mean that your site becomes lost in cyber space- never to be heard from again.
