Continuing Education in the Syracuse Area

Community and technical colleges offer many options for people whose budget, schedule, or other factors prevent them from enrolling in a traditional college or university. If nothing else, a two-year degree gives you a leg up on admissions to a four-year school - and are a great way to improve your academic record if your high school career wasn't quite what it could be. No matter what your unique situation, these schools have something to offer you.

Onondoga Community College

Offering many different degrees and concentrations ranging from Art to Homeland Security and Disaster Preparedness, OCC is the most popular destination for students looking to continue their education in the CNY area. Unlike most community colleges, OCC has residence halls, which foster the sense of student community that is missing from most two-year schools. (Of course, students may also choose to live off-campus.)

OOC is highly valuable to students who wish to enter a four-year or specialized school. Their transfer agreements with schools like Cornell, SUNY, and Syracuse University make it possible for students to save money while proving themselves to their dream schools, regardless of their past academic performance.

OOC has a robust financial aid program consisting of grants, scholarships, loans, and student employment programs for qualifying students. In order to be eligiblie for the aid, students must be matriculated, be enrolled in at least 6 credt-hours per semester, make satisfactory academic progress, and not be in default on any federal student loan. Specific financial aid programs may have stricter rules.

Typical Yearly Tuition: $7,143

Empire State College at SUNY

Geared towards working adults who want to continue their education, Empire State College offers more degree options than most continuing education-oriented schools. You can earn Associate's and Bachelor's Degrees in Arts and Sciences, as well as the following graduate degrees:

M.A. in Labor and Policy Studies (36 credits)
M.A. in Social Policy (36 credits)
M.A. in Liberal Studies (36 credits)
Master of Business Administration (48 credits)
Master of Arts in Teaching (42 credits)

Empire State College's Student Financial Services will assist students in applying for FAFSA, as well as offering their own financial aid package for qualifying students. This may include grants, scholarships, loans, and work study. Aid is available for both full-time and part-time students.

Typical Yearly Tuition: Around $9,000

No matter what school or degree program you choose, there is nothing quite like the feeling of pride that you'll get from completing a degree program and embarking on your new career. Good luck in your search!
