Controling Our Negative Mental Voice

Cory Mitchell
Few of us are aware of how our subconscious thought process is affecting our life. It is, and often it can affect us in a negative way. If you want to succeed and have the confidence to do things you want in life, you will need to tune into this subconscious process and alter the beliefs that are negatively affecting you.

To understand how we change our unconscious beliefs we need to know about our thought processes. The thoughts we are most aware of are our conscious thoughts, these are the thoughts we almost choose to think. These thoughts are the dialogues we have with our self in order to work out a problem, think something through, etc. Our subconscious thoughts are the thoughts that happen in the background and unless we learn to tune into them, often we are not aware they are even there. If we are having trouble following through in a task or can't get ourselves motivated it is likely that these subconscious thoughts are quite negative and thus deter us from stepping out of our comfort zone. These subconscious thoughts are the ones that often tell us we can't do something, or that a dream is stupid and unrealistic for us. It is the little voice in our head, right when we are about to do something, that causes us to back out.

Tuning into the these thoughts is not difficult. In fact you may already be somewhat aware of them but where not sure what to do about them, or simply assumed that was just your personality and there is nothing that can be done about it. Well, there is can be done. Our subconscious thoughts are based on beliefs that we have picked up throughout our life and accepted as truth, even though they may not be. By finding out what the false belief is, we can analyze it, then change it.

As an example, you may have been told as a child that no one is truly happy. You accepted this and did not bother to look for evidence of the contrary. As you continued to accept this belief over time you only saw evidence that supported this view (most people look for evidence to support their view of the world), and did not accept evidence that people around you were happy. The belief that no one is truly happy became cemented and because of this you yourself feel you can not be truly happy either. This is the kind of false belief that negatively affects us, but we can change it.

The first step is to tune into what our false beliefs are. Since we may not even be aware we hold a negative or false belief we need to find out what they are. This can be done by simply becoming aware of what these thoughts are there. As you go through your day, whenever you are exposed to a situation you normally back out of or feel uncomfortable with, focus on what is flashing through your mind. It is these flashing subconscious thoughts are making you feel that way. By listening to what your mind is firing in these uncomfortable moments, you can pick out the false beliefs.

I remember one time in university, I wanted to say something, so I quickly went over what I wanted to say and then went to say it. I stopped, and didn't say a word. Why? Right before I was about to speak that little voice said, "No one wants to hear this." It took me by surprise that I was actually having that thought. But that is the type of thought you are looking for. With practice you will be able to pick them out easily and analyze them to see if they are valid, positive, false, or negative.

In another article, "Changing Our Negative Mental Voice" we will look at how to change these false beliefs once we are aware of what they are and have tuned into them.
