Controlling Thyroid Issues Through Diet

Vincent Bryant
A properly functioning thyroid is important because of its ability to absorb iodine that is found in many kinds of foods. Once the thyroid has absorbed the iodine found in foods, it begins to convert it into hormones known as T3 and T4. T3 and T4 hormones are known to control metabolism levels in the body. A slow metabolism can lead to weight gain and even obesity. A fast metabolism leads to a lean body and in extreme cases can lead into unhealthy under weight issues. If the thyroid is not functioning properly, it can produce too much T3 and T4 levels in the blood stream and lead to increased heart rate, exhaustion, weight loss and loss of sleep. This is commonly called Hyperthyroidism as the thyroid is acting on a hyper level converting too many hormones that could lead to abnormal weight loss and other unhealthy conditions.

This condition can be found mostly in people ages 20 to 40 as well as women who are pregnant. There are some natural foods that can be added to ones diet that can counter act and stabilize a thyroid that is producing high levels of T3 and T4 hormones. Recent medical studies have shown that people who eat foods that are high in Omega-3 help to reduce Hyperthyroidism. Other foods such as beans and vegetables also help the thyroid to operate at healthy levels. Other sources that can help an over active thyroid are vitamin C, calcium and certain herbs. Herbs like Saint Johns Wort and Bugleweed are known to stabilize an over active thyroid.

It is best to use natural healthy food for an over active thyroid because those who are treated with certain types of medicine can experience extreme weight gain. In some cases individuals continued to see weight gain after they were treated. Incorporating healthy foods such as vegetables, beans and fish into an every day diet can drastically change an over active thyroid condition commonly known as hyperthyroidism.

In some cases, people who suffer from hyperthyroidism can actually gain weight instead of losing weight. This is caused by having an increase in appetite as a result of a high metabolism. A decrease in energy or feeling of weakness makes it harder to burn off calories, increasing weight gain because of such a high appetite level. Individuals who suffer from the effects of weight gain with hyperthyroidism also can eat healthy foods to bring their weight down. Whether experiencing weight loss or weight gain from hyperthyroidism, the right healthy food can act as a counter balance and stabilize not only T3 and T4 hormones in the blood, but also weight.
