One of the greatest tools a writer can use is the ability to stir people's emotions up with just one sentence. Most readers love to be challenged in their belief systems every time they read about something they feel strongly about, but you cannot go over the line with an anti-semitic or racist remark, of course.

You can take a stand against certain religious beliefs, for instance, but you cannot denigrate an entire religion over the actions of just one person who you happen to disagree with on abortion or the death penalty.

The best way to write about controversial subject matters such as these is to describe an event in your life or someone else's life that caused an abrupt change in your own belief system regarding abortion or the death penalty. A great example of this actually happening would be the case of Mikal Gilmore.
