I have this passion for mentioning movie quotes at random moments in conversation. My older brothers are great with picking up that string of conversation, but everyone else looks at us as if we have grown another appendage from our foreheads. The look alone is a good reason for doing it, the comic expression on their face brings a certain, strange satisfaction. ( I am told I have a severely warped sense of humor at times. This must be the manifestation.) The look does not compose the full extent of the warm glow that infuses a person when the quote is recognized and the flow of conversation is altered irrevocably. It is like you made an extremely small tear in the fabric of space. Ahhh...now my nerdiness is truly showing.
So, 10 quotes that work well in conversation:
#10- "Aaahhh, I don't have to take this. I have hundreds of people dying to abuse me." Ghostbusters is such a great quote movie. Bill Murray is hitting on Sigourney Weaver and when she makes a sarcastic reply, he makes this absolutely awesome line. This works for everyone, because we all catch a little guff once in a while. Let's face it, everyone needs to be brought low to keep their heads from over-inflating with ego, even me. I know we all think we're perfect but, let's face it. If our heads got too big, it would be hard to fit in the car.
#9- "One more and I get a set of steak knives." Tom Cruise in A Few Good Men. He defended two Marines charged with killing a man through hazing. This comment was about how he was dealing all of his cases outside of court. One more negotiation, and he got the knives. Well, this quote is great for when numbers are being discussed, usually in a bad way, about you. Like my list of boyfriends that I no longer talk to, one more.... You get the picture.
#8- "Most things is here don't react too well to bullets." Insert Sean Connery doing a Russian accent. All of the Tom Clancy movies are great, and I am sure you will see me quote them again and again, but this one from Hunt for Red October is great for when you need things done gently or something has broken. Lets face it, when your girl/guy is rubbing your shoulders a little too hard, this is a great line. I could give other examples, but the rating on this should stay at PG.
#7- "I steal from the rich and give to the needy. I keep a wee percentage, but I'm not greedy." This actually Robin of the Hood's song in Shrek. I don't know who gave this voice, or wrote the song, but oh my goodness, I think they should be rewarded. I think the whole segment is so funny, and there is a reason I watch this movie again and again. Usage on this quote, well next time you steal a handful of popcorn or a bite of cake from someone, this will lighten the moment when their eyes become daggers intent on slaying you where you stand.
#6- "Let'shopetheoldmangotthattractorbeamoutofcommissionotherwisethisisgoingtobearealshorttripokayhitit." Han Solo, or Harrison Ford, however you like, said this is one of the most famous movies of all time. That's right Star Wars Episode IV. He says this as they are leaving the Death Star and they are in such a rush there is no time to put space between the words. This is great for fast getaways, or when you are running behind. Let's face facts, if you are trying to escape the family gathering, and get out right before the fight explodes, this is a very apt quote indeed. Not that anything like that ever happens to me....no.
#5- "I aim to misbehave." Nathan Fillion and the cast of Firefly (the television show) made the movie Serenity to stave off requests to begin the show again. While the movie was not greatly acclaimed, the television show was awesome, and I highly recommend sitting down to watch it. I also have a thing for Fillion, but that does not greatly impact that suggestion. Anyway, this quote is great for obvious reasons, and if I have to tell you when to use it, you won't need it.
#4- "You've just been erased." As far as Schwarzenegger movies go, this is one of my favorites. Let's face it, in Eraser you get a double cross, dead witnesses, and James Caan trying to frame Arnold for the whole thing. Only True Lies makes it better for me, but then I like the whole trying to lie to Jamie Lee Curtis thing. Anyway, this Eraser quote has so many uses, especially if your friends are competitive like mine. Beat them at a game, and, well, you get the idea.
#3- "I saved your ass. It was great." Samuel L. Jackson and Geena Davis make a great team in the Long Kiss Goodnight. They go out the window at the bus station, through ice, into a pond. Davis is the one who actually saves them, but she is having a strange amnesia episodes, and Jackson is a conman/private detective. This movie is action packed and Davis kicks butt. I had to have someone show me the flick, because I had never heard of it, but it was so worth buying. I mean, the shear amount of times I have used this quote is worth the $10 I used to buy the movie.
#2- "I'm not even supposed to be here today!" Now I used this Clerks quote previously, but it is so versatile. The main character is called in on his day off and spends the whole day complaining about it. Let's face it. As far as conversation quotes go, this one might not get noticed as a quote itself without a little help. But if your day is going as badly as Dante Hick's, then you deserve to use it as often as you would like. Please feel free, I am sure you will want to rent the movie to check the degree of desperation you are supposed to use to say this however. One note, the movie is supposed to be black and white.
And, one of my all time favorite quotes to through into conversation:
#1- "I don't trust anything that bleeds for four days and doesn't die." Mr. Garrison from South Park makes this comment to a classroom full of third graders in their animated classic. First and foremost, I like this movie because of the title, BIGGER, LONGER, AND UNCUT. They were to have another title, but the censors said no way, so they jokingly sent this, and they approved. Apparently censors do not have dirty minds. Obviously, this quote is about women, and though I am one, it doesn't bother me in the least. Mr. Garrison is, after all, in love with his hand puppet, Mr. Hand. How can a woman compete with that? This movie is home to a vast quantity of great quotes, but this one is definitely #1 for its graphic chauvinism.
Though there are thousands more out there to choose from, these are a few of my favorite things. I mean, movie quotes. They move smoothly into a conversation and make the world a better place. Next time you watch your favorite flicks, make note of the great, conversational quotes that would smoothly enter into good group conversation. Good luck with using them and making your own tears in the fabric of space.
