Conversations to Avoid in the Workplace

Erin Schmitt
Many workers spend the majority of their time in their work environment. However this does not mean you should become so comfortable with your work environment that you discuss topics that could be detrimental to your career. Often people become friendly with their co-workers to the point where they share too much personal information. Many times this information can spread through the office and may give your employer or managers preconceived notions about you or your ability to perform your job. Here are some topics you should avoid discussing in the workplace regardless of whom you are discussing them with.

Political Conversations

Political conversations may run wild, especially during an election. Experts highly recommend avoiding discussions regarding your political affiliations and views. In a work environment sharing your political views could hold you back from advancing if your manager has a different political affiliation. Additionally, trying to persuade someone to change their political views will only lead to tension in the workplace.

Intimate Relationships and Family Conversations

Sharing too much personal information with your co-workers or boss could leave them wondering if you are distracted by your home life. You should leave home conflicts out of the office. Discussing with your co-workers your argument with your spouse will show your weaknesses and could undermine your authority. Furthermore, you should always avoid discussing inmate details of your sex life as this could make your co-workers uncomfortable as well as being construed as sexual harassment.

Religious Conversation

As with politics, many people are very sensitive about their religious beliefs. It is recommended to avoid having religious conversations in the workplace. With so many different people in the workplace you are bound to come in contact with people of different religious backgrounds so it is important to keep your views to yourself. Many people do not want or need to hear your views on religion.

Health Related Conversations

Career experts recommend not sharing your health conditions with your co-workers. People do not want to hear all of your aliments and issues you are dealing with. Health related concerns should be kept private to avoid having your employer second guess your abilities. Unless you are suffering from a condition that requires you to take time off of work or you are in need of special accommodations you should not discuss your health with your employer. Discussing this information with co-workers leaves them with a bad impression and could damage your career aspirations.
