Considering all of these facts, Converse All-Stars seemed like a safe style to go with when my daughter and two sons all decided they each wanted to choose a pair of these well known shoes during our most recent shoe shopping excursion. My eight year old daughter chose a really cute pair of banana-yellow All Stars, and my two sons, ages twelve and five, each decided to go with the same shoe, in Kelley green. The shoes looked good, the kids all said they were comfortable, so we walked out of the Journey's Kids store in the mall, three kids now happily bedecked in their brand new Converse All Star shoes.
And that was pretty much the last time those shoes ever looked good.
Despite the fact that these pairs of kid's Converse All-Star shoes were not being worn to do anything but walk on cement or finished walking areas, these ridiculously flimsy shoes began to fall apart almost immediately. The rubber siding at the bottom of the shoes began to crease and pull away from the canvas upper on the first day these shoes were purchased.
These three pairs of Converse All Star shoes were purchased to be used just for going out to public places like the mall, restaurants, etc. These were not purchased to be used for play shoes, and they were not used for play shoes. Furthermore, we homeschool, so these shoes were not even used for typical daily use as would be the case with most children. After just two weeks, the canvas of the shoes began to show a lot of wear, the rubber siding had cracked more, and the shoes generally looked awful. By this time, it was clear that these kid's Converse All-Star shoes were going to have to be used for play shoes, because they looked terrible. At that point, I went out and bought my kids some $10 shoes on clearance from Old Navy just so they would have a decent pair of shoes to wear when we go out in public!
Considering the three pairs of kid's Converse All-Star shoes that I purchased each cost $30, I was really angry that I had essentially wasted nearly $100 in all on these worthless shoes. Converse should either make these shoes more durable, or charge a lot less for them. Personally, our family will never waste another dime on another Converse product ever again.

Post a CommentThis is a good cautionary tale. Parents don't have money to throw down the drain.
"Rugged", I can deal with. Falling apart after just a few days, not so much. Ridiculously enough, soon after the pair in the photo started disintegrating, I bought my son a pair of "play" shoes at Wal-Mart for $10...they've held up remarkably well, are super flexible (read: good for his feet), and look great (and still completely intact) after a run through the washer and dryer. It really bothers me that the name brand shoes that I want for my kids fall apart, and the cheapie wal-mart brand shoes are made 10 times better. It's completely ridiculous.
i have four pairs, three low tops and one hi top. i usually wear the hightops and I bought them last august. on halloween my friends and i built a bonfire and i stood in it and the rubber soles kinda melted off, but i still wear them. last year I let my friend try on my lowtops (his foot is about three sizes bigger than mine!!) and now the canvas is ripped down the sides..they're great if your going for a rugged, not so fancy style, which is what chucks are practically made for.
I remember buying my first pair when I was about 13 and they only lasted that summer.Sad but true, great looking shoes should last longer too.I just purchased a pair for my 13 year old daughter, and she will be hard pressed to make hers last 3 months.LOL
Back in high school, I bought two pairs of Chucks for $15--they never lasted too long. I usually had to glue the sole together to make them last longer. Now I spend money on more expensive shoes that last for years (not something you can do with kids).
yeah, chucks are same
