Cookie Diets: Would You Try One?

Sally Ann Murphy
I never met a diet I didn't like. I am always on the look out for the one diet that will change my life forever. I love Weight Watchers, and have tried Jenny Craig, South Beach, Atkins, and many others. I also love cookies. And so, when the Cookie Diet came alone, I thought I was in heaven.

The original Cookie Diet was created by Dr. Sanford Siegal, and it has been around for over thirty years. Dr. Siegal, an obesity physician, doesn't proclaim that there is any magic to his weight loss - it's a low calorie diet, but the cookies are created to help you control your hunger. They contain amino acids (that's what protein is made from) and fiber. A week's supply of hunger-controlling cookies comes with seven daily bags of six cookies each and will cost you about $59.00. The cookies taste pretty good. You also eat a dinner of lean protein and vegetables every night, which is where I usually stumble. Potatoes are vegetables, right? Dr. Siegal's Cookie Diet will put you at 800-1,500 calories a day, and if you stick to it, you will lose weight. (Eight hundred calories is a bit low, so talk to your doctor before you embark on this diet.) Shop www.cookiediet.com.

Smart for Life has its own cookie diet. A four week kit will cost you $279.00. This is comparable to Dr. Siegal's Cookie Diet, which adds up to be a little less than $240 a month. But, in my opinion, these cookies aren't as good. (What, you think I didn't try them? These are cookies! And it's a diet! My two favorite things, practically.) But they do come in a wide variety of flavors (blueberry, coconut, banana, and chocolate, to name a few), so experiment if you try this diet. Smart for Life states that its Diet Cookie is "scientifically formulated to be a perfect balance of fiber, protein and amino acids - with absolutely no drugs or toxic preservatives." You'll eat six cookies a day, along with a balanced meal, on this diet, and they state you'll lose 12-15 lbs. a month. This was not my experience, but again, "balanced meal" means something different to everyone. Shop www.smartforlife.com.

The Hollywood Cookie Diet. You eat four cookies a day, replacing breakfast, lunch and snacks, and then eat a "sensible dinner." Again, here is where I drop off. I need more guidance! If I knew what a sensible dinner was would I need a diet? The cookies are about 600 calories, so you could eat a 600 calorie dinner and still lose weight (1200 calories is really the lowest most doctors like you to go.) A three day supply is $20, so it will cost you about $200 a month, the cheapest of the three cookie diets. Shop www.hollywooddietstore.com.

It's important to note that none of these diets has an exercise program, and it is harder to lose weight if you don't exercise. Also, eating the same thing every day gets boring, even if it is cookies. (I wish there was a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup diet, though.)

And how was my experience with the Cookie Diet? Some diets work for some people (read my Jenny Craig article if you don't believe me) but not every diet works for every person. Sigh. I still love cookies, though.
