Cool Bedroom Decorating Ideas for Hot Summers

Anni Sofferet

Turn your bedroom into a cool haven even on the hottest summer days. It's easy if you choose a clean color palette, weave in sheer fabrics and add fans to simulate a cool breeze. Here's a collection of cool bedroom decorating ideas to turn the thermometer down this hot season.

White Bedding

Pack up your heavy winter bedding and replace them with 1000 thread count cotton sheets in pure white. Why white? Because it feels and looks cool and soothing. It is also easy to bleach sweat stains out of. Avoid using a blanket altogether and spread two flats sheets one on top of the other.

Sheer White Curtains

Add sheer, gauzy white curtains over your bedroom window for a light, fluttery spectacle. Hang the curtain pole high above the window and allow the curtains to drape over the floor, like the train of a bridal gown. You'll find cheap sheer fabrics at fabric stores. Hang the fabric with clip on curtain rings.

Blinds

From faux wood blinds to plantation shutters, be sure to cover your windows completely this summer. Remember that even opaque roman blinds may turn sheer in direct, hot sunlight, so try to avoid them in your bedroom.

Light Floor Cover

Remove any heavy shag rugs from your bedroom and replace them with a bamboo rug for summer. The hard surface will feel cool in comparison with synthetic rugs. And the earth-tone will add a visually cooling effect as well. Even over a carpet, a bamboo rug is ideal for hot summer days.

Elegant Fan

If you have an electrical outlet overhead (and enough clearance) consider hanging a beautiful fan over your master bed. For a floor fan, save money by buying a beautiful retro desk fan and place it on a tall, elegant bar stool.

Cool Pillows

Add a splash of cold colors to your summer bedroom with decorative pillows. Select pond and sea colors like blues, aquamarines, greens and purples. Check out garden centers for outdoor pillows that will look bright and resist sweat stains.

Flower Vases

Place a flower vase or tall glass of water by each bedside and fill it with plants from your garden. Flowers are obviously beautiful, but so are tree or shrub branches. Collect several green hues and combine them into a bouquet of leaves.

Contrast Wall

Paint the wall behind your bed in a cooling color, like blue or pale green. You may also wish to draw a frame on the wall and just paint the center directly behind the bed. This makes the project quick and easy, and very elegant.

Summer Canvas

Remove the art from your bedroom walls. The less crowded the room looks the cooler it will feel. Add a summer canvas behind the bed by framing a beautiful floral fabric in a large frame or by hanging a floral print. Paint the frame white to complement the cool white appeal of the room.
