Cool Breeze

David Lanier
Finally a cool breeze,
just now before midnight,
from the maddening heat,
at last there's some respite.
Now the crickets begin
their ancient nightly chant.
Through the clouds high in
the east lightning cracks.
Again and again it flashes,
but doesn't thunder much,
or if it does it's so far,
the sound is hushed.
Tonight the air is fresh,
like a pure mountain rain
has washed the air
from the heat of today.
Out above the lake the
skies are still quite clear.
God that breeze is nice.
